Job Description

The Director of Development, Athletics is a key leadership role focused on securing philanthropic support for Prairie View A&M University’s athletic programs. This individual will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive fundraising strategies to enhance athletic facilities, scholarships, and programmatic support. Additionally, the Director will manage and mentor a team of major gift officers to ensure coordinated and effective fundraising efforts. The Director will work closely with the Vice President for University Advancement, the Athletic Director, coaches, and other university stakeholders to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects and donors.

Key Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy:

  • Develop and execute a strategic plan for athletic fundraising that aligns with the university’s overall advancement goals.

  • Identify and prioritize fundraising needs in collaboration with the Athletic Director and coaching staff.

  • Create and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects and donors.

Donor Cultivation and Solicitation:

  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors for major gifts, planned giving, and annual fund contributions specifically for athletics.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with alumni, parents, businesses, and other potential supporters.

  • Conduct face-to-face meetings, outreach activities, and engagement events to build a robust donor pipeline.

Stewardship:

  • Implement a comprehensive donor stewardship program to ensure ongoing engagement and recognition of athletic donors.

  • Coordinate acknowledgment letters, impact reports, and donor recognition events.

  • Ensure compliance with donor intent and maintain accurate records of donor agreements and interactions.

Event Planning and Coordination:

  • Plan and execute fundraising events, such as athletic banquets, golf tournaments, and donor appreciation events.

  • Collaborate with university and athletic staff to maximize event success and donor engagement.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work closely with the Athletic Director, coaches, and other university departments to integrate fundraising efforts and promote athletic achievements.

  • Prepare and present reports on fundraising progress, goals, and initiatives to university leadership and stakeholders.

  • Utilize university communication channels to highlight donor impact and athletic program successes.

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Manage and mentor a team of major gift officers, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.

  • Set performance goals and conduct regular performance evaluations for major gift officers.

  • Foster a collaborative and efficient work environment within the development team.

Budget and Resource Management:

  • Develop and manage the budget for athletic fundraising activities.

  • Ensure efficient use of resources and compliance with university policies and procedures.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Require Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

  • Minimum of five years of experience in fundraising, with a focus on athletic fundraising preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advance degree preferred.

  • Proven track record of securing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals.

  • Experience managing and leading a team of fundraising professionals.

  • Strong understanding of NCAA regulations and compliance issues related to athletic fundraising.

  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • High level of organization and attention to detail.

  • Proficiency with donor database systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge) and other advancement technologies.
