Axis Assistant Underwriter in United States

To support the team to underwrite and develop the Medical Malpractice account, working closely with the Underwriters and Control functions to facilitate the underwriting process in a streamlined and seamless manner. You benefit from a 360 degree view, being involved in supporting and effectively contributing to a wide variety of Medical Malpractice tasks and team projects – from working with wider, non-underwriting areas of the business, to underwriting and business development initiatives – both research and delivery.

You’ll have a solid background in assisting underwriting teams, having worked in an insurance support function preferably for a negligence-based class and/or healthcare for at least 3 years.

It is essential, that the individual selected for this role should have the ability to work well in a team environment, with excellent communication skills. They should be able to engage with and develop good and beneficial working relationships with Brokers and Coverholders, including when requested supporting Underwriters to arrange and attend meetings taking notes where needed. They should be a highly motivated individual and be able to manage their time well, with the ability to prioritise and plan, whilst dealing with any issues that arise sometimes, that may fall outside of the scope of the normal core activities.

It is also expected that this individual develops their role and understanding and knowledge of the teams broader underwriting responsibilities and role to ensure good customer outcomes throughout the insurance lifecycle (i.e. from initial product design, due diligence and data gathering, conduct and compliance, audit and reporting, through to end-customer claims satisfaction).


  • Support Underwriters to write such classes of business as outlined in by the underwriting authority to achieve targets set out in the business plan, in accordance with underwriting standards and controls.

  • Data entry and audit, ensuring accuracy of risks entered on the underwriting systems and spreadsheets, with the support of the Underwriting Assistant.

  • Respond to and manage enquiries from Brokers in a timely and professional manner, with the guidance of Senior Underwriters.

  • Ensure understanding of risk appetite and decisions, selection and underwriting process and reviewing risks with that in mind, to ensure underwriting standards are maintained, documenting accordingly.

  • Training of Brokers and Coverholders on risk appetite, coverage, policy and procedure.

  • Build strong relationships with Brokers and Coverholders (both face-to-face and over the phone), with particular attention to service and responsiveness.

  • Attend client and Broker meetings with or without colleagues as appropriate, whilst keeping in mind Company policy and procedure.

  • Use formal reporting mechanisms to promptly notify the relevant parties of any perceived new risks or failures of existing control measures.

  • At all times consider the effect of any actions taken on the customers of Axis with the intention of improving experience as required, provide accurate, complete and appropriate data in accordance with the Axis Data Policy, as part of their role and responsibility at all times.

  • Effectively manage administrative functions with other members of the team to promote a corporate culture which pays due regard to the interests of Customers and treats them fairly at all times.

  • Achieve agreed training programmes as applicable, including Lloyds briefings, market seminars, CII, etc.

  • Monitoring regulatory, market and agency bulletins and circulars.

  • Maintenance of files and systems, when required.

  • Collate all relevant information required for any internal/external audits, meetings or reviews.

  • Update relevant document repository to include underwriting notes and complete rate monitoring for risks written.


  • General knowledge of insurance, underwriting policy and procedure.

  • Knowledge and preferably experience in the classes written by the unit, including Medical Malpractice, Professional Negligence / Miscellaneous EO and General Liability, with additional expertise in Lifesciences and legal aspects of classes written.

  • Knowledge of FCA, PRA and/or Lloyds compliance and procedures

  • Microsoft Office proficient:- Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel; plus also RiskWrite, IRIS, Swordfish and Desktop

  • Influencing, negotiating, listening and questioning skills

  • Ability to analyse numerical and raw data and present results in a clear and concise manner as appropriate to the audience
