POSITION:

Assistant Professor of Graphic Design, full-time, tenure-track, 9-month appointment, beginning August 2024.

The Department of Art, Theatre and Dance at West Texas A&M University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Graphic Design position to begin in August 2024 based on budget approval. A terminal degree (MFA) in Graphic Design or a related field is required, and professional experience is preferred. This position requires the ability to teach across the field of graphic design, as well as other courses appropriate to the candidate’s expertise and the program’s needs, like typography, animation, UX/UI, web design, illustration, new media and studio art foundations. Appropriate levels of teaching effectiveness, professional creative activity, and service will be necessary for promotion and/or tenure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Position requires a 3/3 teaching load in a variety of graphic design courses, based on experience, qualifications and department need. In addition, it will be expected that the successful candidate assists with student advising, recruitment of prospective students, helps maintain and oversee the operation of all digital media and graphic design spaces, and serves the department, college and university as needed.

INSTITUTION:

Located in Canyon and Amarillo, West Texas A&M University is a nationally-ranked, regional, comprehensive university offering degrees through the doctoral level to an enrollment of over 9,000 students. WTAMU is a member of the Texas A&M University System. The Art program is housed within the Department of Art, Theatre and Dance, with approximately 100 undergraduate and graduate art majors. The Art program offers a BA/BS degree with emphases in studio art/management, art education and art history, BFA degrees in studio art and graphic design, and an MFA degree in Studio Art. Studio art disciplines include Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Digital Art, Ceramics, and Sculpture. The Art program thrives in a rich art community that includes the Amarillo Museum of Art, the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, and many local galleries. Faculty, students and visiting artists in the department are served by the Dord Fitz Formal Art Gallery, as well as auxiliary gallery space in Amarillo for students. Recent graduates of the program have become successful artists, designers, educators, artist assistants, and museum/gallery employees in both regional and national art centers.

RANK/SALARY:

9-month, tenure-track position, benefits eligible. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A terminal degree (MFA) in Graphic Design or a related field is required. The successful candidate will be able to show demonstrated teaching success in graphic design courses and have some professional experience as a graphic designer. A teaching or professional background in typography, illustration, animation, UX/UI, web design, new media and/or studio art are preferred, as practical knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite. Two years of teaching experience in higher education is preferred.
