O&M Technician – Communication & Network Specialist


Location: Virginia Beach, VA

Schedule: Full Time

Caribou Thunder is seeking an O&M Technician – Communication & Network Specialist to support a large Department of Defense contract. This position will operate and maintain shipboard equipment and provide acoustic and non-acoustic information and data to a shore facility via advanced, robust, and resilient networks, communication systems, and Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence (C4I) technologies for Surveillance Towed Array Sensor System.


Maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of data networks, digital computers, microprocessors, and distributed data systems.

Stage, image, and deploy machines (desktop/laptop) as well as migrate data.

Operate and maintain the technology 24 hours a day while at-sea and at a minimum of ten (10) hours a day while in port.

At sea deployment for 6 months, then stateside for 3 months.

This does not mean out at sea for 6 months at a time.

Ship operations will generally consist of 30 days in port twice a year for equipment maintenance/modification and mission preparation.

During the six-month mission period, vessels will periodically enter remote ports for stores and minor mission maintenance.

Port visits may vary from 3-14 days. O&M techs will live aboard the ship while in port.


Three years of practical hands-on experience in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of data networks, digital computers, microprocessors, and distributed data systems.

Demonstrated experience in developing network automation solutions and experience with the new network technologies including voice, automation, and other network technologies.

Demonstrated experience with updating systems, including operating systems, networking and storage templates, server design, storage allocation, and virtualization.

Experience in troubleshooting network connectivity issues, repairing hardware, and performing daily tasks such as status reports, asset tracking, and generating trouble tickets.

Experience with other communications technologies is also desired but is not considered mandatory for this position.

Experience with COMMs SUBSYSTEM includes: SHF, UHF SATCOM and LOS, HF, NOW, IFF, SECURE VOICE and DATA CRYPTOS, CMS, EKMS, KMI, SIPRNET, ADNS/CFCP, and/or NIPRNET is desired but not mandatory for this position.

Must have an active Passport


Two years of combined experience in the management, administration, maintenance and repair of UNIX and Windows based computer networks. Experience must include the areas listed below:

  • ISNS, CENTRIXS, and/or SCI Navy systems (or equivalent type network)

  • Windows based network management and administration

  • Cisco routing and switching and server and router configuration and management

  • UNIX/LINUX based processing systems management

  • Other networking tools, software, and appliances


    Top Secret or be eligible to obtain a TS/SCI.


    Associate Degree (or higher) in Computer Science or four (4) years relevant field experience and DoD 8570 IAT Level II compliant certifications is desired.

    A degree alone is not sufficient to meet the education requirement. Applicants can also be a graduate of US Navy electronics “C” school or equivalent civilian electronics technical school.

  • Curriculum must relate to the maintenance, troubleshooting and repair of:

  • Secure networks and communications systems

  • Navigation systems

  • Sonar surveillance systems


    Security + or CISCO security

    Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Design and Architecture Certification (CCDA), or equivalent

    OS Certificate including:

  • Configuring Windows 10 (70-697)

  • Configuring Windows Server 2012 (70-410)

  • Administering Windows Server 2012 (70-411)

  • LINUX, UNIX or equivalent

  • Database Management
