Health First Chaplain - Pastoral Care in Viera, Florida

POSITION SUMMARY

Nurture a positive environment where the health and well-being of each individual is supported through the delivery of spiritual and emotional support. Recipients of pastoral/spiritual support include the entire spectrum for patients, patient families, loved ones, associates, physicians, and/or volunteers. Services are performed at all and/or designated Health First locations, and/or where the patient or family resides. Provide crisis interventions to individuals as needed and consultation with healthcare teams, including physicians. Advocates and educates members of healthcare teams regarding appropriate use of spiritual care services.

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  1. Provide comprehensive pastoral care from assessment, delivery and follow up, to individuals using their faith when dealing with illness, trauma, and conflict and stress associated with these events. Advocate and provide appropriate services with patients at various stages, such as newly admitted, current patients of Health First, and those with special requests. Provide critical and pastoral care to those in waiting areas, and crisis intervention including response to Code Blue and Trauma Alerts.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and skill to provide a safe environment, collaborate and communicate effectively with all age groups served by the Pastoral Care department.
  3. Assist in helping families remain informed of patient’s condition, with family and health care team, discussing goals of care or medical updates and resolve conflicts that may arise between individuals or groups related to critical or sensitive situations.
  4. Assist and support families at time of withdrawals of life support and at time of death, helping families use their faith system to cope with loss, and support individuals as appropriate when viewing the body.
  5. Educate individuals regarding Advanced Directives; guide individuals, including surrogate(s) on understanding documents related to Living Wills, Power of Attorney, etc, and participate with family and health care team to discuss goals and medical updates.
  6. Maintain a working relationship between the Pastoral Care department and medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments.
  7. Provide pastoral services in such a way as to accomplish the institutional, as well as the departmental objectives. Demonstrate the mission and vision of the institution in all aspects of duties, while adhering to hospital standards, policies, and procedures, and code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains
  8. In conjunction with the department’s goals and objectives, establish and nurture relationships with local churches and communities of faith that support the specific site(s) where services are or can be provided.
  9. Assist Pastoral Care Leadership in special projects, as instructed, or as needed to enhance department effectiveness and/or organization strategy.
    1. Maintain confidentiality of patient information according to the HIPAA, department and Health First procedures and policies. Document all patient and family services provided.
    2. Support and provide educational opportunities to Associate Chaplains, Spiritual Care Volunteers and No One Dies Alone Volunteers when requested.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: *Master’s Degree in Divinity or Theology from a properly accredited institution; Completion of One (1) Unit of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) prior to hire date. Commitment to complete more units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) during employment. *Licensure: *None Required *Certification: *None Required *Work Experience:One year experience in hospital or hospice pastoral / chaplaincy setting *Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: *Microsoft Office – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint

*PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS*

Education:Four Units of CPE, if full-time. Certification:Certified or eligible for Certification with Association of Professional Chaplains (APC) or Cognate Group. Work Experience:Ordination by Faith Community and endorsement to operate as a chaplain in a healthcare environment. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:Critical thinking, Decision-making, Financial acumen.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Sedentary – Office Workers

  • Sitting most of the time; occasional bending, stooping; walking and standing; lift more than 10 pounds.
  • Hand-eye coordination; near-far eye coordination to tolerate long periods of daily computer use.
  • Self-manage own stress; decompress from challenging and catastrophic experiences of those counseled.
  • Internal environment may convey low noise level; local travel will convey varied conditions and noise levels.
  • Multi-task in a fast pace, environment with conflicting or demanding priorities.
