U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 2nd Mate Pipeline Dredge Class I in Vicksburg, Mississippi

Summary This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position works under the general supervision of the 1st Mate. Generally exercises own initiative and judgment in discharging daily routine responsibilities as shift mate on a self-propelled pipe line dredge. Responsibilities Exercising supervision over the shift crew normally ranging from 5 to 8 employees, including deck equipment operators, welder, tender operator, pipelineman, deckhands, etc. Standing a regular watch and is responsible for the continued operation maintenance and safety of the dredge during the shift. Instructing and training subordinates in established procedures and methods and observes work for accuracy, adequacy, and compliance with, instructions. Working with and directing assigned crew and other necessary help in the movement, replacements and repairs of pipeline. Maintaining the dredge, which consists of general cleaning, chipping surfaces painting, and making minor woodwork and metal repairs. Assisting in conducting fire, lifeboat, and man-overboard drills. Requisitions through 1st Mate necessary materials and supplies for use in deck maintenance. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an 2nd Mate Pipeline Dredge Class I without more than normal supervision-Instructing and training subordinates in established procedures and methods, and observe work for accuracy, adequacy, and compliance with, instructions. Work with and direct assigned crew and other necessary help in the movement, replacement and repair of pipeline. Direct and check work of repairmen in making repairs and replacements to cables, sheaves, dustpan, rubber sleeves,etc.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for continuous standing, walking, bending, and/or climbing in the operation of winches and ratchets, making up and breaking up of tows, loading materials and supplies, and similar work operations. Lifts and carries items up to 40 lbs. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed on deck and in other locations of the vessel. Spends most of the time on the deck. Work is performed outside subjecting the incumbent to all kinds of weather extremes. The potential exists for slipping on wet decks. Danger of drowning is present in case of accident. There is danger from river traffic hazards, particularly in foggy weather and at night. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. Two year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required.
