Description
AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.UC paragraph
Our Region Services team redefines the way AWS designs, builds, and operates AWS regions to enable new AWS Cloud Infrastructure and Services offerings to customers across every industry and of every size, including start-ups, enterprises, and public sector organizations. We are actively seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in cloud operations.
Key job responsibilities
Systems Engineers with AWS will dive deep into understanding the root cause of a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way and consult with senior engineers. We own our services and believe in making out-of-hours support as painless as possible. To achieve this, we implement Operational Excellence best practices and strive to automate manual processes.
Systems Engineers will possess and/or develop a broad range of skills. They utilise their Linux skills to troubleshoot, innovate fixes and workarounds, keep software up-to-date and provide data and metrics that help manage the capacity and efficiency of our services. They may draw on their networking knowledge to identity and troubleshoot network connectivity issues. They communicate clearly and collaborate with others to deliver results. They are self-starters, comfortable dealing with ambiguity and change. They are customer-obsessed, always looking to understand customer pain points and find resolutions quickly and completely.
Must hold or be able to attain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency clearance (see https://www1.defence.gov.au/security/clearances).
A day in the life
You’ll spend a majority of your time operating and improving one of our largest software systems. Over the course of a week, you will review the operational health of the services in your team’s care, and on locating any anomaly, will write up an actionable bug report. As a responsible engineer, you’ve learned never to make changes to production systems without a plan, so you reviewed then executed changes following a change management process to one of the production systems in your care. You will also help resolve your team’s backlog of operational issues. You round off the week by writing a cool script that you shared with your team which helps get to root cause faster of a hard problem that you diagnosed earlier.
You will be required to occasionally participate in an “on-call” rotations to resolve incidents occurring out-of-hours.
About the team
Region Services provides the highest caliber Operational Solutions and Cleared Support for services within our Regions. We provide 'hands on keyboard' support to our service teams by deploying changes into these isolated regions, monitoring the results, and reporting any issues that are observed.

Basic Qualifications
Experience supporting cloud systems or other services.
Proficient troubleshooting and anticipating problems that affect the performance, reliability, or availability of software systems
Proficient executing standard operating procedures and following operational best practices
Knowledge of scripting processes in a language such as Bash, Python, or Ruby or coding software applications in a modern language such as Java, TypeScript, or similar
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts requiring work from multiple team members
Experience performance tuning software applications and optimizing fleet utilization
Experience with Infrastructure as Code, (such as CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar)
