Description

Under general direction, provides advanced skilled nursing to patients with specialty referrals; addresses patients' needs through assessments and appropriate interventions; educates patients and their families; and promotes health and safety. Additionally, this position will play an integral role in maintaining accurate documentation, supporting compliance with healthcare regulations, and contributing to the development of clinic policies and procedures.

PAYROLL TITLE: Senior Registered Nurse - Ambulatory Care

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

The Senior Registered Nurse-Ambulatory Care series is distinguished from other nursing classifications in that it is assigned to ambulatory care programs affiliated with the Ventura County Medical Center and requires that incumbents demonstrate advanced competency skills and knowledge specific to specialty areas (i.e., family care, women's services, pediatrics, infusion/oncology, surgery/orthopedics, etc.). Incumbents are expected to work at the full scope of their licensure providing clinical care with a decreasing amount of supervision commensurate with their experience. The senior level is distinguished by experience and leadership assignments.

WHAT WE OFFER:

  • Educational Incentive for completion of: 2.5% for an Associate's degree, 3.5% for a Bachelor's degree, or 5% for a Master's degree.

  • Certification Pay: $0.813 per hour based on scheduled work week hours for each qualified certification up to a maximum of five (5) certifications. One of the five certifications may be paid at $2.00 per hour for a National Certification pursuant to provisions in Sec. 805 of the CNA Memorandum of Agreement.

  • Continuous County Service Incentive Pay: 1% for 7 years, 1.25% for 12 years and 1.5% for 17 years

  • Flexible Credit Allowance: Biweekly contribution towards medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from authorized plans.

  • Pension Plan: Participation in the County's defined benefit plan.

AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Health Care Agency - Ambulatory Care

Senior Registered Nurse-Ambulatory Care is represented by the California Nurses' Association (CNA) and is eligible for overtime compensation. Salary placement will be determined according to the current CNA memorandum of agreement.

The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill current and future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for this position only. There is currently one (1) Regular vacancy. This vacancy is currently budgeted at 72 hours per pay period.

Examples Of Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Manages a caseload of individuals with specialty referrals by c oordinating and facilitating delivery of care ;

  • Interprets physician’s written orders and takes necessary steps to ensure completion;

  • Uses screening tools and guidelines to assess and identify nursing care needs of patients;

  • Plans, informs, implements, and evaluates appropriate interventions ;

  • Follows up on referrals and appointments;

  • Maintains health boundaries, professional ethics, and patient confidentiality ;

  • Safeguards patient’s health and safety by reporting abuse and neglect;

  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and competence in communication with patients from diverse backgrounds regarding disease prevention, health maintenance, and physician instructions;

  • Refers individuals and families to available community resources such as medical clinics, and behavioral health or public benefits;

  • Develops and implements patient and family education programs;

  • Performs basic data collection assessments and documents variances;

  • Utilizes programs such as Cerner, eReferral, and Microsoft Office to review patient charts, manage referrals, and perform data entry;

  • Ensures appropriate documentation is entered in electronic medical records;

  • Maintains and applies current knowledge and skill in patient care specialty areas;

  • Coordinates patient grievances, patient safety notifications, and resolution of incidents;

  • Participates in the development of clinic policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care;

  • Supports clinical operations maintaining regulatory readiness for Joint Commission audits;

  • Attends meeting and trainings; and

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

These are entrance requirements to the exam process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.

EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:

Requires three (3) years of full-time professional registered nursing experience, including two (2) years of full-time experience in an ambulatory care setting.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess and maintain a current, valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California

  • Must possess a current, valid Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification by first day of employment and maintain thereafter

  • Must have experience with regulatory readiness for Joint Commission audits

  • Must have experience with patient grievances, patient safety notifications, and resolution of incidents

  • Must have skill in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook

DESIRED:

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

  • Experience using Cerner, eReferral or another Electronic Health Records System

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES:

Comprehensive knowledge of: the principles, practices, and techniques used in nursing care at specialty clinics. Working knowledge of: patient and staff educational methods; quality assurance processes; nursing committee activities; clinic administrative functions; and Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.

Working ability to: provide direction and serve as a resource to others; complete required continuing education programs; work proficiently in emergency and/or stressful situations; maintain confidentiality of patient/client information; effectively maintain a positive working relationship with medical staff, the public, patients, and administration; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; provide guidance and oversight to clinic staff to ensure high quality services are provided; ensure compliance with regulatory, legal, and contractual requirements; make informed and independent decisions; and employ effective use of knowledge and critical thinking skills to review patient records and assess patient condition to adequately determine referral need.
