Veterinary Assistant - Surgery Department
Primary Responsibilities:
Manage and provide for the patient’s needs in the surgery department.
Assist with sterile preparation, draping, and scrubbing in for surgical procedures to ensure a clean and safe operating environment.
Provide intraoperative support by anticipating the surgeon’s needs and assisting with tasks as needed.
Assist technicians with radiographic procedures.
Running lab work as directed by technician.
Assist veterinary technician with restraint in all aspects during surgical procedures; pre-medication, set up, induction, set up of surgical monitoring, surgical assisting.
Restraint of surgical patients for IV catheters, bandage changes, physical examinations, minor procedures (ex. Suture removals).
Fill pre-printed prescriptions.
Witness drawing of controlled drugs.
Set up, clean, and turnaround of operation rooms and knocking stations. Includes sterile technique of opening surgical equipment, instruments and tables.
Assist in pack prep as time allows.
Check messages on surgery line and deliver appropriately to team members.
Stock surgical stations and operating rooms as needed.
Shave surgical patients and perform rough prep as directed.
Document legibly and keep accurate medical records in accordance to hospital policy.
All employees will be scheduled and expected to work rotating holiday shifts in the emergency and critical care department.
All employees are required to participate in the on-call rotation as needed. Shifts are subject to revisions and changes at the discretion of the hospital.
Clear understanding and enforcement of OSHA regulations and hospital safety standards.
Performs other job duties as assigned.
COMPENSATION:
This position has an initial hiring range of $18.00 to $24.00 per hour based on skillset and experience. We offer a competitive shift differential for team members working the hours of 6pm to 6am at $2.00 per hour on top of base pay along with competitive benefits, including continuing education, staff pet discounts, incentives for professional development, health insurance, and 401k.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have minimum of two years’ experience in veterinary medicine.
Must have valid high school diploma or GED. AVA preferred but not required.
Knowledge of general surgical procedures and protocols.
Knowledge of advanced patient handling and restraint.
Excellent communication skills. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
Must be flexible and able to adapt to new situations.
Ability to act as a team player, adhering to all core values of the hospital.
Must be able to obtain a Veterinary Medication Clerks License upon hire and keep active throughout the entirety of employment.
