Thompson Metal Fab Assistant Project Manager in Vancouver, Washington

*Position Overview:  *The Assistant Project Manager will play a crucial supporting role by helping manage large, complex steel fabrication projects. This position involves coordinating project schedules and budgets, ensuring the accuracy of project documentation, and maintaining clear communication with clients, subcontractors, and internal departments. The Assistant Project Manager will also support the successful execution of projects by overseeing technical processes, reviewing fabrication drawings, and managing material logistics.

Job Description:  The Assistant Project Manager will be responsible for the following tasks and areas of expertise:

  • Client Liaison: Serve as a project point of contact for TMF, acting as a liaison between clients and internal departments to ensure project goals are met. Provide guidance and support to clients throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Project Scheduling: Maintain and update detailed project schedules, ensuring alignment with client expectations and internal production capabilities. Communicate timelines and milestones to the shop floor and other relevant departments.
  • Budget Management: Assist PM in managing project budgets, which may include change orders and adjustments to project scope. Help ensure that all financial aspects are accurately tracked and reported.
  • Technical Review: Review project drawings and specifications before fabrication begins. Ensure all documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and meets industry standards.
  • Process Management: Help drive the processes required to move projects towards completion, ensuring that all technical and logistical elements are organized and executed consistently.
  • Material Coordination: Work closely with the purchasing department to procure materials in line with the project schedule. Manage material tickets, nesting lists, and packing lists to ensure timely and accurate delivery to the shop floor.
  • Logistics and Delivery: Coordinate delivery schedules and transportation logistics to ensure materials and fabricated components arrive on time and meet project requirements.
  • Documentation Management: Maintain accurate project records, including technical documentation, schedules, and client communications. Ensure all documentation is accessible to relevant stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Experience, Education:

  • Team Collaboration: Strong ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, both independently and as part of a project group.
  • Problem-Solving: Capable of maintaining composure under pressure and finding creative solutions to technical and logistical challenges.
  • Organization and Prioritization: Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize competing needs effectively.
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Project, Word, and Outlook. Experience with CAD software and ERP/MRP systems is preferred.
  • Fabrication Knowledge: Understanding of steel fabrication standards (AISC, ASME, API, AWS) and the ability to interpret fabrication drawings and terminology is preferred.
  • Industry Experience: 2+ years of experience in the steel fabrication industry required, with a preference for experience on AISC and/or ASME projects.
  • Customer Service: Ability to provide excellent customer service, ensuring client satisfaction throughout the project lifecycle.
