As Salty the seagull, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s mascot, you will work alongside the Community Relations Students (CRS) attending over 40 community events each year. It is no surprise that Salty is a well-recognized character in the community and always receives a lot of attention. Salty is a loveable, friendly seagull who enjoys meeting new people, giving them high-fives, and posing for photos.

Salty the Seagull is a highly enthusiastic mascot who will be working throughout the 2025 season, primarily on weekends from May through August. Additionally, there will be opportunities to work approximately 6-8 weekend events from September to December.

As the Salty the SeagullMascot, you will:

  • Participatein a training session with the community relations students in May.

  • Attendcommunity events throughout the Lower Mainland with the community relations teamand leadership students.

  • Dress inthe Salty mascot costume and:

  • Greet community members with handshakes, hugs, andhigh-fives.

  • Be enthusiastic and animated.

  • Perform funny activities.

  • Pose for photos.

  • Participate in the Canada Together mascot dance-off.

  • Learn toadapt to different situations with children, teenagers, and adults, including gaugingsocial cues to understand the level of interaction with children and visitorsto the event.

  • Beresponsible for the costume and help the community relations staff pack up the costumeand ensure it’s taken care of properly.

  • Createlasting positive impressions for children and families.

What you bring:

  • As the successful candidate, you are anoutgoing person who is enthusiastic, customer service-oriented, reliable and ateam player who is willing to roll up your sleeves to get the job done.

  • You must work well with others, including thecommunity relations team, volunteer secondary school students and thechildren/families who attend community events.

  • Ideal applicants should be in good physicalcondition to both wear the costume and stand or walk for extended periods oftime.

  • Previous experience in customer service,events, or promotion work is an asset.

To apply for this position, you must be a full-time student with plans to return to your studies in Fall 2025. You will be required to provide your own method of transportation to get to and from the event location, however, the community relations team will transport the costume to each event and return it to Canada Place.

You must be available to attend the community relationstraining from May 6 to May 16, 2025.

Location: Vancouver, Canada

Job type: Bargaining Unit, Seasonal/ In-person. Averaging approximately four (4) to sixteen (16) hours per weekend, from May to December. A typical Salty shift is between four (4) and eight (8) hours. Within that shift there will be approximately one interactive set per/hour lasting approximately 20 to 30 minutes with a 10-to-20-minute break between each interactive set.

Working environment: Requirement to travel within the Lower Mainland. Salty is always accompanied by a handler. The handler will act as your eyes and ears and help navigate you through the sometimes-challenging environments at events.

Duration: The community relations staff position is primarily a summer position running from approximately May 6, 2025, to August 29, 2025, with the opportunity to work occasional weekend shifts from September to December (approx. 6 to 10 events). Mandatory shifts will be both Canada Together (July 1) and Port Day (September 27).
