Job Title: Vehicle Maintenance Mechanic I

Department: Transportation

Reports to: Vehicle Maintenance Garage Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Summary: Repairs and maintains company vehicles to minimize breakdowns as well as maintain state, federal, and DOT standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Repairs and replaces steering components such as; tie rods, ball joints, drag links, steering gear box, etc. and realign according to manufacturer’s specifications.

  • Performs tune ups on GM and Ford engines including working on plugs, coil packs, wires, rotors and distributer caps.

  • Replaces alternator, water pump, starter, and air compressor

  • Replaces drive line components such as u-joints, carrier bearings, associated yokes.

  • Diagnoses and repairs ABS brakes systems.

  • Performs AC system diagnostic, repairs and recharges based ASE certification.

  • Performs installation and maintenance of camera systems in and on vehicles.

  • Replaces tailgate motors and hydraulic cylinders.

  • Replaces transmission filters and repairs leaks.

  • Performs fabrication for trailer floors and rear sill.

  • Installs and repairs interior motion and timer light.

  • Replaces king pins, steering gear, and non-serviceable front hubs.

  • After repairs, examines and test drives vehicles to ensure that the repair was made successfully and that the vehicle is working properly.

  • Demonstrates safe and use of hand tools such as combination wrenches, screw drivers, torque wrenches, pliers, as well as power tools such as impact wrenches, drivers, drills, saws, etc.

  • Demonstrates safe and proper use of vehicle lift, jacks, stands etc.

  • Participates in on-call rotation to support Route Sales and Transport in breakdown support.

  • Proficient upon availability to perform all level 1 duties as needed or assigned.

    Education and/or Experience:

  • High School Diploma or GED;

  • Three years’ related experience;

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Language Skills:

    Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to effectively present information to other employees of organization.

    Mathematical Skills:

    Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

    Reasoning Ability:

    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

    Computer Skills:

  • Knowledge of or ability to learn Vehicle Maintenance planning & tracking software (EAM) system.

  • Knowledge of Cadec and Diagnostic software.

    Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Current valid driver's license.

  • Valid state inspection license for tractors and trailers.

  • Valid air conditioning certification

    Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift and electric jack.

  • Knowledge of welding, plasma cutter and cutting torch.
