This position is in the Energy Systems Division which is part of the Interdisciplinary Science Department. The Energy Systems Division performs research for electric grid modernization, renewable energy system deployment, energy system efficiency and emissions, geothermal energy system materials and advanced manufacturing methods.

Position Description

This position involves in-lab research on the air pollutant emissions of small boilers using biofuels. The scope will initially include liquid and gaseous fuels but is expected to transition to solid fuels as well. The scope will include use of advanced measurement tools to study real time particulate mass and size distribution, volatile organic compounds, hazardous air pollutants, and greenhouse gas pollutants.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In-lab setup and calibration of instrumentation
  • Planning and executing emission test runs
  • Preliminary data analysis and contribution to reports

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, or other closely related field of study.
  • Fundamentals of combustion, mass balances, and efficiency
  • MS Office and Python scripting for data analysis
  • Knowledge of fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass transfer operations
  • Comfortable working in an equipment laboratory environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with combustion emission measurements
  • Knowledge of experimental error analysis
  • Experience with LabVIEW and/or data acquisition in general
  • Basic machine tool operations

Other Information:

Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The salary range for this position is $70000 - $85000 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
