JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Pennsylvania State University's Department of Electrical Engineering, in conjunction with the Computational Electromagnetics and Antennas Research Lab (CEARL), is seeking a highly qualified individual for a Researcher or Assistant Research Professor position. The appointment is a term, non-tenure line research faculty position. The PSU-CEARL group (http://cearl.ee.psu.edu/) is internationally recognized for its pioneering contributions in electromagnetics, particularly in the areas of antenna engineering, computational electromagnetics, optics, and metamaterials.

Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in funded projects that will seek to develop advanced and transformative technologies in electromagnetics. The primary responsibilities of the position will be assisting and/or leading the mechanical development of cutting-edge research programs, including antenna/metamaterial/metasurface design and simulation, as well as preparing reports for relevant sponsored contracts. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to prepare and present research results at domestic and international conferences, and will be expected to publish findings in conference proceedings and technical journal articles as required. The successful candidate will also be expected to support the writing of proposals, assist in seeking external funding opportunities, and assist in the basic research and design responsibilities for current and future high-profile research projects in the CEARL group.

Job Duties:

  • Provide technical assistance to leadership, and/or make significant contributions to prototype development projects and/or technology development efforts.

  • Contribute to all aspects of prototype development activities and prototype design history files, such as ideation/prototyping, design/development documentation, technical risk mitigation, verification testing and reports, design validation studies, design reviews, and support the compilation of documents to enable technical data package submissions.

  • Develop engineering solutions and investigate competing technologies, as needed.

  • Support or lead efforts to evaluate and identify design solutions, which will meet prototype performance requirements, cost targets, and manufacturability requirements.

  • Develop prototype mechanical verification and validation testing requirements.

  • Support in ensuring prototype mechanical design and performance specifications are appropriate and accurate.

  • Support internal and external vendors and fabrication shops as needed, including external design and/or development partners.

  • Support marketing in the planning and creation of technical brochures, training programs, and technical presentations to customers and the sales force.

  • Support leadership as required.

  • All additional duties as directed.

Requirements:

The Researcher should possess a Master's Degree or its equivalent, or be an active candidate for a terminal degree, in Engineering. The Assistant Research Professor should possess a terminal degree or its equivalent in Engineering. Alternatively, the Assistant Research Professor without a terminal degree should possess at least a Master's Degree or its equivalent in Engineering, must have demonstrated ability as a researcher, and must have shown evidence of professional growth and scholarship in their discipline. The successful candidate must also have United States Citizenship and Solidworks working knowledge, as well as proficiency in the creation and critical review of engineering drawings, tolerancing, and tolerance analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in electromagnetic device development and/or sustaining engineering efforts utilizing an iterative process of development. Experience/knowledge of antenna/metamaterial/metasurface systems and technologies is highly preferred.

  • Capable of developing many of the deliverables required to document the design and development with appropriate specificity to enable low-volume fabrication of prototype devices with high quality.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows Office applications, including MS Outlook, MS Powerpoint, MS Project, Visio, etc.

  • Knowledge of common manufacturing methodologies, technologies, and materials employed in antenna/metamaterial/metasurface devices.

  • Ability to solve complicated technical challenges and use good judgement in making timely decisions.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others and work well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.

  • Capable of effectively executing on multiple work streams in parallel.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Comfortable presenting information to team members and group leaders.

  • Ability to work in a professional open-space environment without distracting others.

  • Capable of accomplishing efforts in a timely manner with high quality and with a positive attitude.
