JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Plant Science, Roadside Vegetation Management Project at The Pennsylvania State University (https://psu.edu) , University Park, PA is hiring a Research Technologist. This position provides research, technical, and outreach education support for a research project on roadside vegetation management. The position duties include:

  • developing and performing complex laboratory, greenhouse and field research evaluating vegetation management practices and materials;

  • assisting in developing and delivering (in partnership with team members) training sessions at seminars, conferences and pesticide applicator meetings for vegetation managers; assisting in developing and conducting two annual conferences and a field day;

  • assisting faculty and team members in design of research projects and preparation of research proposals;

  • providing cooperative and consultative expertise to other research, public service, and educational organizations;

  • operating complex scientific equipment in data collection and operating and maintaining tractor-based and handheld pesticide application equipment, cultural equipment, and mechanical equipment under inhospitable non-cropland settings in conjunction with research and demonstrations conducted throughout Pennsylvania;

  • providing necessary administrative and technical support for research experiments to include assisting in developing and submitting monthly and annual progress reports;

  • maintaining chemical inventories; and

  • integrating and analyzing experimental data and results in preparation of annual reports, technical reports, publishing of journal articles, and consulting with associated organizations in utilization of research results.

This is a full-time, benefit-eligible limited term position funded for one year from date of hire with a good possibility of refunding.

Education and Experience:

Typical minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree or higher (Master’s Degree preferred) in Horticulture, Weed Science, Landscape Management, Plant Science, Biology or related field and seven or more years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. PA pesticide applicator certification including Core, Category 10 (Right-of-way) and Category 18 (Research and Demonstration) will be required within 90 days after hire as well as a valid driver's license for operation of university equipment on public roads. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks. The position will also require good physical health for extensive time in outdoor weather conditions, the capability of carrying a backpack sprayer (approx. 30 lbs.) and truck-mounted hose spray equipment for extended periods under operational conditions on uneven surfaces and on steep terrain, possibly under inclement weather conditions. In addition, the qualified candidate must be capable of working with chainsaws and other similar hand-held vegetation management tools.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$42,100.00 - $61,000.00
