JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for a motivated and talented Process Engineer to join our Product and Process Design Department of the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL/Penn State's purpose is to develop innovative solutions to challenging national problems in support of the Navy, DoD, and Intel communities engineering and technology needs. This position will research, design, and develop innovative solutions for challenging engineering and technology problems. We are looking for individuals that can understand complex and/or ill-defined systems, develop action plans to resolve questions about those systems, and deliver concrete findings to stakeholders.

Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Design and fabrication of complex mechanical systems using advanced engineering and manufacturing methods to include additive manufacturing of polymers and metals. Design methods will include implicit equation-based design modeling.

  • Perform design of experiments, design optimization and design space exploration of advanced structures

  • Analysis of materials and as fabricated material properties

  • Develop modeling and simulation environments for DOD and industry sponsors using various engineering software applications (e.g., Matlab, Simulink, Mathematica, Python, Excel) using sound scientific theories and engineering principles

  • Work with a diverse engineering team to capture design rules in areas such as structures design, power and energy, and hydrodynamics and fluid dynamics, and construct system level models that capture their interactions and calculate system level properties.

  • Co-author papers and proposals, prepare reports, manage projects, interact with sponsors, and manage small projects related to materials and advanced design methods.

  • Interact in a collaborative manner with other team members, engineers, and scientists.

Requirements for this position include:

  • BS in Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent Science discipline

  • Demonstrated ability in design using CAD tools and other digital engineering principles

  • Demonstrated ability to program engineering and scientific applications using multiple languages e.g., (Java, C++, Matlab, Python)

  • Interest in materials, materials science, and analysis

  • Willingness to concurrently work multiple projects (usually 2-5)

  • Demonstrated ability to work closely with small teams to meet challenging design and program objectives

  • Be inquisitive, proactive, and interested in learning new tools, techniques, and problem domains

This job will be filled at multiple levels, depending upon the successful candidate's education, and experience. Minimally requires a bachelors' degree in an Engineering or Science discipline plus two years' related experience. Additional education and/or experience required for higher level positions.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$86,300.00 - $164,000.00
