JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Tomato Breeding Program in the Department of Plant Science at Penn State seeks to hire two part-time undergraduate students to assist with the research conducted during spring 2025. These positions are for several months of work and will end by late April/early May. The incumbent students will assist with primarily greenhouse activities, including tomato plant cultivation and hybrid seed production; but work will also be performed in the laboratory as seeds are extracted from fruit and processed for long-term storage.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

• Basic knowledge of plant genetics and breeding; applicant must be an undergraduate student in Plant Science who has previously enrolled and successfully completed HORT 407 – Plant Breeding course;

• Applicant must have completed greenhouse and laboratory safety training;

• Demonstrated interest in plant breeding and genetics research;

• Experience working with plants (especially tomatoes) in greenhouse, field, and laboratory settings;

• Experience in basic laboratory techniques and equipment, including Pipettes, PCR, Centrifuge; must be familiar with tissue sampling and storage, common laboratory reagents, and DNA extraction;

• Experience making manual crosses for hybrid seed.
