JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is searching for a Hydrodynamics Engineer to foster and support growth of vehicle control capabilities within the Fluid Dynamics Division, part of the Fluid Dynamics and Acoustics Office, which has a long, successful history of providing innovative solutions and technology for a range of U.S. Government and industry sponsors. This position will support the design, testing and analysis of vehicle control systems and software for marine vehicles as well as related applications such as turbomachinery and rotorcraft aerodynamics. Mentorship and business development will be significant components of this position. This position may be filled as either a non-tenure Research Faculty or a Research and Development Engineer.

You will:

Foster technical area growth through the training and development of engineering expertise in the Department to meet current needs and drive future capabilities

Foster business growth through the identification, pursuit and successful engagement of new business opportunities

Mentor and guide junior personnel in understanding established problem solving techniques and the application of the physics of marine vehicle stability and control through the execution of basic and applied research in pursuit of sponsor goals

Support hardware test events through acquisition and analysis of complex flow-field and vehicle dynamics data sets

Perform design and analysis of vehicle control concepts, flight dynamics, and external aero/hydrodynamics

Manage projects of moderate to large size and scope; make determinations as to feasibility of project goals, objectives, timeline and budget

Author/co-author reports, presentations, and papers

Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree or higher in a related discipline; Masters preferred, and 14+ years related experience.

Required skills/experience areas include:

Strong background in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and multiphase flows, and their relation to undersea vehicle dynamics and control

Strong familiarity with the requirements and application of marine vehicle guidance and navigation

Demonstrated effectiveness at presenting in front of senior personnel, conveying information to drive to action or decision

Strong familiarity with the development of analytical and mathematical models of aero and/or hydro vehicles, and models of electrical and mechanical subsystems

Demonstrated success with collaborations in a diverse, multi-disciplinary, team-oriented culture

Demonstrated success in transitioning ideas from hardware, to field testing, to the customer/end user

Demonstrated ability to work independently, part of a team, or as a team lead to accomplish project goals within budget and timeframe constraints

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

A Ph.D. in mechanical or aeronautical/aerospace engineering

Design and execution of experiments utilizing free-running vehicles as well as captive models

Experience with the modeling and control of cavity-running bodies

Active or recent government security clearance

Your working location will primarily be located in State College, PA, with possib lity of some hybrid work. This position will require some off-site travel and off-site work.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is: $123,200.00 - $191,000.00
