JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State (https://psu.edu) Institute for Sustainable Agricultural, Food, and Environmental Science (SAFES) (http://agsci.psu.edu/safes) and its Agriculture and Environment Center (AEC) (http://agsci.psu.edu/aec) are seeking a candidate for a full-time Extension Educator (Advanced Professional). The Extension Educator will serve as a Penn State Extension Educator and oversee the development and delivery of statewide educational and outreach programs on climate change, with specific emphasis on climate smart agriculture and resiliency of agricultural and natural systems in the face of a changing climate. The position will assist the AEC Director, other AEC staff, and Penn State and partner collaborators in the development and delivery of CARAT, an extensive and innovative research, outreach, and implementation program working with dairy producers in Pennsylvania to implement climate-smart dairy farming practices. The position will be the lead liaison between collaborating researchers, Extension Educators, partner stakeholders, funding and technical assistance providers, and producers to ensure successful collaboration and integration of the research, Extension, education, outreach, technical assistance, and implementation elements of the project.

As part of Penn State’s CARAT project, the position will help coordinate a collaborative public/private outreach partnership to reach dairy farmers across the Commonwealth and help participating farmers plan and implement climate-smart practices. The position will interpret and disseminate the latest research into impacts of climate change on agriculture, best strategies and practices for implementing climate-smart agriculture, and successful adaptation and resiliency methods for agricultural production and stewardship of natural resources. The position will represent the University in local communities, across the Commonwealth, and/or nationally on issues related to climate change and climate smart agriculture.

Duties Include:

  • Develop and lead a new statewide Extension team around climate change, with specific emphasis on climate smart agriculture and resiliency of agricultural and natural systems in the face of a changing climate.

  • Assist in developing, coordinating, and managing a collaborative public/private outreach partnership to reach dairy farmers across the Commonwealth and help participating farmers plan and implement climate-smart practices.

  • Working with project partners, develop and manage climate-smart projects and programs on farms throughout the Commonwealth. This work involves working with industry representatives and technical assistance providers to devise, plan and execute complex tasks to ensure funding and technical assistance resources and partners are secured and deployed to successfully implement climate-smart practices, assisting partners in administration of external funds to support projects and verify project implementation, and serving as lead liaison between landowners, researchers, and multiple partners to make complex projects happen and achieve and measure climate-smart goals and results in a timely manner. It involves coordinating administrative, financial, personnel and planning aspects of climate-smart projects on behalf of the partnership.

  • Develop and present educational and technical trainings including demonstration projects, tours, presentations, and workshops throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to a wide variety of stakeholders on topics related to climate change with specific emphasis on climate smart agriculture and resiliency of agricultural and natural systems in the face of a changing climate.

  • Develop original content to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as online courses, videos, webinars, social media material, and electronic publications in addition to traditional print publications.

  • Work closely with university-based research faculty in developing, conducting, and disseminating applied research that is relevant to climate change, with specific emphasis on climate smart agriculture and resiliency of agricultural and natural systems in the face of a changing climate, in furtherance of the mission of the AEC, the College, and the University.

  • Assist the AEC’s leadership by participating in and helping to develop collaborative grants and projects in support of the AEC and SAFES mission of integrated, research, outreach, and education.

  • Facilitate inter-organizational collaboration between various stakeholders, partners, and state and federal agencies through representation of Penn State on priority stakeholder groups and advisory committees and through helping to manage climate-smart agricultural partnerships facilitated by the AEC. This work includes responding to requests from various governmental agencies seeking information necessary to make decisions that ultimately affect stakeholders.

This position offers a flexible work arrangement that combines remote and on-campus work. Questions related to flexible work should be directed to the hiring manager during the interview process.

Education and Experience:

Typical requirements for this position include a Master’s Degree or higher, plus 2 years or more of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Degrees in agricultural and natural resources science is preferred; knowledge of farming and climate-smart practices on farms, especially dairy; knowledge of climate change science; experience with farming operations and communicating with farmers; experience and skills in communication and education; complex problem-solving skills; complex collaborative project management.

This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$61,800.00 - $89,600.00
