JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

We are searching for an Engineering Support Specialist to join our Transduction Device and Array Development Department (TDAD) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

As part of the SONAR Research and Development Division (SRDD), the TDAD department provides transduction analysis and solutions for DoD underwater SONAR applications. This job position supports the fabrication, assembly, and test of a variety of SONAR transducers/arrays.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Interpret engineering drawings and fabrication procedures

  • Perform electromechanical testing, electromechanical fabrication, and assembly of underwater acoustic transducers

  • Assess and identify system faults, and adjust and repair as directed

  • Troubleshoot hardware failures / system faults

  • Assist engineers with in-water/field testing, procurement, tracking, selection of materials, and inspection of hardware components

  • Inspect, test and calibrate parts and equipment as directed

    This position can be filled at multiple levels, depending upon your education and experience. Typical requirements include an Associate’s Degree or higher; 2+ years of experience. Additional experience and/or education are required for higher level positions.

Additional responsibilities for higher level position includes:

  • Providing input to and perform design/layout of transduction laboratory upgrades

  • Providing operational training to lower level staff

  • Developing and providing transducer fabrication and test documentation

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Associate’s degree in an engineering-centered program OR engineering-centered work experience

  • Comprehension of mechanical drawings

  • Mechanical and/or electrical fabrication / assembly / construction experience

  • Computer literacy

  • Operation of basic electronic test equipment

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Electromechanical transducer assembly and testing

  • Production and/or characterization of piezoelectric materials

  • Adhesive bonding

  • Soldering

  • Light machining practices / tools

  • CAD

  • Active government security clearance

Your working location will be fully on-site, located in State College, PA.

The pay range for this position, including all possible grades is:

$51,000.00 - $81,500.00
