JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Environmental Policy Goddard Chair Group seeks an enthusiastic undergraduate student with experience in forest resources to support a multidisciplinary project on forest ecology, climate adaptation, and the carbon economy. The selected student will work in 2 research teams, with the opportunity to develop a personal capstone project. Activities will include professional development in several areas: science communication and outreach, scientific writing, application of silvicultural knowledge in the field, and participation in forestry-related fieldwork. The selected applicant will collaborate on one of the 2024 Climate Solutions Accelerator workshops with a multidisciplinary team of researchers from the ESM Department.

Duties and responsibilities may include 1) mapping, measuring, and identifying trees, plants, seedlings, and other forest ecology techniques; 2) developing a literature review and extension material; 3) using GPS, laser rangefinders, and other forest survey equipment; and 4) potentially working outdoors in various beautiful locations throughout PA.

Qualifications: The candidate must have knowledge of forest measurements, basic forest ecology and silviculture, team spirit and proactivity, a willingness to be outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, a willingness to work in a team, and enthusiasm. Ideally, but not required, the candidate will have previous experience working outdoors identifying trees and herbaceous plants in Pennsylvania forests.
