JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The School of Visual Arts (SoVA) in the College of Arts and Architecture at Penn State University invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art position in Drawing & Painting with an anticipated start date of Fall 2024.
The College of Arts and Architecture is working to establish a culture of anti-racism and anti-oppression that embraces individual identities, fosters a culture of inclusion, and promotes equity through curricula, values, standards, ideals, policies, and practices. The ideal candidate will provide evidence of their experience with, and interest in, contributing to these goals.
SoVA welcomes an innovative and engaged artist/practitioner who will help shape the future of its Studio Art programs, focusing primarily contemporary painting and drawing, and assisting in the development and implementation of minor in Illustration with Digital Arts and graphic design programs.
Responsibilities:
Teach courses in the Drawing & Painting area, and the Studio Art program
Participate in critiques, mentor BFA and MFA students, conduct individual studies with undergraduate and graduate students, as well as serve on graduate thesis committees
Collaborate in curricular revision and development within the Drawing & Painting area to develop a progressive and innovative content
Contribute to development and implementation of Illustration minor
Support our students in developing creative works as part of a socially and culturally engaged research university
Conduct scholarly work (research and/or creative activity), with an active exhibition record and emerging recognition in the field
Conduct service to the unit, college, university, and professional organizations.
Requirements:
MFA with a focus in Studio Art
Ongoing studio practice and peer-reviewed achievements/exhibition record
Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice regarding curricula development, inclusive practices in educating diverse student bodies or working with a diverse faculty and staff, along with evidence of working collectively to cultivate a culture that supports success and enables all members of a college community to thrive.
Preferred qualifications:
Teaching experience as instructor of record in higher education (one semester)
Service to profession and community engagement
Knowledge in one or more areas of Studio Art, or inter- / trans-disciplinary art practices, in both contemporary and historical contexts (specific knowledge in digital painting and illustration as well as literacy in the Adobe Suite is advantageous).
