JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Department of Nutritional Sciences in the College of Health and Human Development (HHD) at Penn State is seeking an Academic Adviser. The Nutritional Sciences major includes 3 options (tracks), including an Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND)-approved track in Nutrition and Dietetics. The person in this position is expected to have a sound understanding of the profession and its many opportunities, be able to interface with the HHD advising center, and be able to interface with academic advisers in other departments of the College of Health and Human Development.

Responsibilities:

Apply the structure of the undergraduate major, its 3 options (tracks), and the prerequisites for efficient progression to the degree.

Support transfer students by understanding the scope of nutrition courses taught at Campuses within the Penn State system, and the appropriate course prerequisites and substitutions.

Be proficient with computerized data analytics for establishing advising appointments, monitoring student progress, and sending updates to students via Canvas (course management system).

Schedule regular office hours for face-to-face advising and remote advising meetings as needed; maintain timely records of student contacts and meeting outcomes.

Participate in College/Departmental recruitment activities such as New Student Orientation (NSO), Accepted Student Programs (ASPs), Spend a Summer Day (SASD), and Majors Night.

Understand and promote dual majors with Nutritional Sciences as one of the majors, the minor in Nutritional Sciences.

Work with tenure track and teaching faculty to establish career-focused mentoring activities for all 3 undergraduate options.

Support the undergraduate portion of the IUG.

Work with the HHD Advising Center to "onboard" student applicants, meet with accepted students, participate in family visitation days, and promote CQI for HHD advising.

Pilot new events for reaching prospective students and engaging alumni.

Develop career counseling sessions and communications regarding professional development opportunities.

Assist with the organization of student activities and recognition events.

May evaluate academic advising services; as instructed, propose, update, or develop programs/improvements.

Coordinate and support communication with undergraduate students in the major.

If the final candidate has the appropriate background for teaching, there may be an opportunity to teach a course in an area related to professional development.

Education and Expe ience Requirements:

This position will be filled as an Intermediate or Advanced professional depending on the final applicants' education and experience. For the Intermediate Professional level, it requires a Master's Degree or higher, plus one year of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Additional education and/or experience are required for higher-level positions. Preference will be given to those with degrees in Nutritional Sciences, Academic Advising, or a related field.

Desired Experience and Qualifications:

Experience in clinical counseling or dietetics practice

Experience with communications to support marketing and dissemination of the major

Experience in fostering undergraduate research or student engagement in organizations

Some training and/or work experience related to the profession of nutritional sciences (research, teaching, business, regulatory affairs, or service)

Desired Skills:

Ability to quickly learn and contribute to a culture of excellence in academic advising at Penn State.

Be self-motivated and task-oriented.

Have excellent time management skills, and be a team player.

Excellent communication skills (oral, written, and electronic communications) are essential.

Familiarity with Penn State-specific programs (LionPath; Starfish; Canvas) is not required prior to being hired, but the ability to quickly learn and effectively use these systems is essential.

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades is: $42,100.00 - $67,300.00
