This position serves as a Transportation Supervisor I for the Union and Mecklenburg County Bridge Unit in Monroe, NC. Position is responsible for supervision of one or more crews in the maintenance and repair of State-maintained bridges including, but not limited to: working in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment and with power tools to perform a wide range of maintenance to repair, replace and construct bridges, pipes and culverts. Position will assist management with investigating and answering concerns from the public. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions and the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes utilizing NCDOT required Proper Protective Equipment, following OSHR and NCDOT Safety Policy and Procedure Manual. This position is subject to emergency call back and will be required to work nights and weekends as needed for emergency and planned operations during adverse weather. The recommended applicant must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently as needed. Position is responsible for assisting management with the counsel and discipline of employees; monitoring of expenditures; maintaining work records, time sheets, job reports, and inventory records; planning work operations and adjusting work assignments; training employees on-the-job; conducting performance reviews; assisting with interviewing and recommending new staff. Position responsible for ensuring equipment is maintained and serviced as required. Position must routinely determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish standard and non-standard work assignments.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in bridge maintenance and repair, as well as bridge maintenance equipment operation

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employee and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used

  • Experience in planning work and supervising a bridge crew

  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices

  • Experience inspecting bridges for minor maintenance needs

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.

Necessary Special Requirement:

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
