Responsibilities

The Role:

The Occupational Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for establishing and maintaining a strong safety culture, implementation of the Spirit EHS Framework along with ensuring OSHA compliance. The individual will be responsible for leading and implementing all aspects of the safety program to ensure compliance with existing corporate standards, industry best practices and audit processes to ensure continuous improvement in plant safety and health.

  • Daily management and engagement of the line organization is required to manage and improve incident investigations, hazard control, safe work practices and safety communications

  • Involved with and long-term safety program planning, including annual safety plans and injury reduction goals to support a sustainable environment

  • Developing safety related training course for the workforce

  • The position requires significant time on the factory floor engaging line management and department personnel through coaching, training, and reinforcement

  • Liaison to Union safety representatives

  • Ensures compliance with all ISO / OHSAS standards

    Key Accountabilities:

  • Plans, develops, promotes, advises, implements, and assesses processes to achieve and maintain a safe and healthy work environment

  • Works with management, employees, occupational health professionals, suppliers, customers, regulatory agencies, Governmental Affairs, Law Department, trade associations, and governmental officials applying industrial hygiene, occupational safety, ordnance safety, ergonomics, toxicology, and health physics disciplines

  • Anticipates, identifies, evaluates, and controls hazards

  • Evaluates the impact of emerging issues and regulations on company operations, conducts problem investigation, coordinates resolutions to issues, evaluates engineering design, performs analyses, ensures appropriate selection of control strategies

  • Evaluates existing or emergent risk management control technologies and provides information, regulatory assessment, interpretation and required reporting, and technical expertise to management and employees

  • Facilitates the implementation of comprehensive occupational health and safety programs. Develops and provides training

  • Provides regulatory interpretation, analysis, and technical advice

  • Prepares position papers on emerging regulations and legislation

  • Provides information, input and testimony to trade organizations, government officials and Governmental Affairs

  • Provide analysis of new and pending regulations to SHEA professionals

Qualifications

Requirements:

At least 7-8 years' related experience with no degree OR a Bachelor's degree plus 4 years’ related experience OR a Master’s degree plus 2 years’ related experience OR a PhD or JD plus 0-1 year of related experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CFD (Certified Safety Professional) and/or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist)

  • Experience in an Occupational Health & Safety Specialist role

  • Experience with Microsoft Office creating reports and presentations

  • Experience with detailed incident investigations with root cause analysis with corrective action identification

  • Safety related experience with a record of progressive accomplishments

  • Proven success in facilities with 500 or more employees

  • Proved success with driving culture change

  • Experience working with union partnerships

  • Specific experience in the areas of Fall Protection, Incident Investigation, Ergonomics, Behavioral Based Safety, Machine Guarding and Lean Manufacturing

  • Previous history with OSHA Voluntary Protection Program

  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)

  • A fundamental working knowledge and understanding of State and Federal regulations pertaining to OSHA, NFPA and ANSI

  • Proven problem-solving skills including incident investigation and root cause analysis

  • Ability to execute action plans on time

  • High attention to detail

  • Proven ability to work in teams

  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
