Opportunity Overview

At TuSimple we are looking for an experienced System Engineer to join our team in San Diego, CA or Tucson, AZ. You will work cross-functionally with all engineering teams to build one of the most advanced systems operating on the roads. Your passion, determination, and expertise will be key points to overcome obstacles that will lead to a safe and commercially ready self-driving truck.

Role Responsibilities

  • You will be responsible for the braking system and its interaction with the autonomous driving system.

  • Work with the product team to analyze product level requirements and break them down in actionable engineering requirements.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and specify interaction with other components of the system.

  • Works with suppliers to define the braking system architecture in the context of autonomous driving vehicles.

  • Work closely with the vehicle control algorithm team to select the most optimized architecture for performance, reliability and safety.

  • Works with partners to understand system failures modes and defines associated mitigation strategies.

  • Prepare test plan and review test results. Propose direction for improvements.

  • Investigate new technologies and their benefits.

  • Ensures that the engineering development process is applied to validate the system.

  • Create and maintain comprehensive system documentation.

  • Ensure forward and backward traceability for every requirement.

  • Ensure accurate test case coverage for each requirement

  • Take initiative to identify, communicate, and execute high-impact improvements

  • Report progress and issues to the system engineering manager and project managers.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree or above in Electronics, Electrical or Electromechanical.

  • 3 to 5 years experience working on braking systems

  • Excellent skills in analysing, decomposing and structuring a complex system

  • Open, curious and creative mind

  • Strong experience with requirement management tools

  • Understanding of Agile methodology

  • Excellent communication, organization, and coordination skills

  • Proven ability to work under firm deadlines in a fast-paced environment

  • Good understanding of CAN communication

Bonus Points

  • Experience of Class 8 braking systems

  • Functional safety process ISO 26262

  • Autonomous driving or safety electronics systems experience

  • Familiarity with, or practical experience in Computer, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

  • Experience with control system algorithms

  • Strong organization and execution abilities

  • Strong logical thinking
