Salary Grade: 8\ \ Pay Range:\ Hiring Range: \$22.16 - \$26.04 Per Hour\ Full Range: \$22.16 - \$29.92 Per Hour\ \ Salary offers are based on the candidate\'s equivalent experience and internal equity with other employees within the same job classification.\ \ Pima County Conservation Lands and Resources (CLR) Department is seeking a dynamic and passionate Environmental Education Specialist to engage the public in a wide variety of topics including desert ecology, Sonoran Desert conservation, and natural and cultural resources of Pima County. This intermittent role requires excellent communication skills, the ability to engage a variety of audiences, and an understanding of Sonoran Desert ecosystems.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Supports the development and implementation of environmental education programs that promote sustainability and environmental stewardship;
  • Facilitates and delivers educational workshops, presentations, and outreach activities aimed at increasing community awareness of environmental issues;
  • Reviews and updates educational materials, ensuring they are accurate, engaging, and aligned with current environmental science and practices;
  • Collaborates with schools, community organizations, and governmental agencies to expand the reach and impact of environmental education initiatives;
  • Conducts surveys and assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and gather data for continuous improvement;
  • Ensures that all educational activities comply with relevant County policies and state/federal environmental regulations;
  • Assists in setting goals and objectives for environmental education programs, aligning them with broader departmental and community priorities;
  • Researches and analyzes environmental trends and data to inform program content and strategy;
  • Leads and coordinates the efforts of staff and volunteers in delivering environmental education activities;
  • Utilizes multimedia tools, digital platforms, and other technologies to enhance the delivery and accessibility of environmental education programs.
Minimum Qualifications

(1) An Associate\'s degree from an accredited college or university in public relations, communications, social work, community development, or a closely related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment, AND two (2) years of experience in community outreach, engagement, or a related area.

\ (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.)

\ OR:

\ (2) One year of experience with Pima County in a relevant position as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment.

  1. Minimum tw o (2) years of experience delivering natural resource education, interpretation, and environmental education programs for adults, youth, and families.
  2. Experience working with school and youth groups.
  3. Minimum one (1) year of experience teaching various ages desert ecology, Sonoran Desert conservation, and the natural, historical, and cultural resources of the Southwest region.
  4. Bachelor\'s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in education, environmental science, environmental education, conservation biology and ecology, biological sciences, wildlife biology, natural resources, or related field as defined by the appointing authority at the time of recruitment.
  5. Experience working with, mentoring, and supervising volunteers.
  6. Experience developing educational and interpretive materials, programs, and activities.
