Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of Sunnyside Center’s Children’s Program, the Head Teacher – Pre-School administers Sunnyside Center’s Pre-School Program consistent with the philosophy, objectives, standards and procedures of Catholic Charities and Sunnyside Center.


  • Follow the universal pre-kindergarten school curriculum.

  • Maintain files on children – specifically social and cognitive growth and development.

  • Informally observe and evaluate children.

  • Provide referrals to parents when needed.

  • Communicate with parents on a daily basis through face to face contact and daily sheets.

  • Coordinate ideas and activities with other teachers and assistant teachers.

  • Supervise assistant teacher and volunteers.

  • Maintain upkeep of room.

  • Know and follow OCFS regulations.

  • Interact frequently, effectively, and respectfully with the children by smiling, touching, and holding them and communicating directly with each child at the child’s level.

  • Communicate and respond to individual children during activities and routines.

  • Be available and responsive to children’s needs, questions, and requests.

  • Encourage and model social behaviors and expectations which are developmentally appropriate.

  • Acknowledge feelings and demonstrate appropriate expressions of emotions.

  • Implement program-specific curriculum guidelines.

  • Design an environment that responds to children’s individual developmental levels, physical and emotional needs and current interests.

  • Support Catholic Charities’ and Sunnyside Center’s missions.

  • Strive to fulfill goals and objectives of Sunnyside Center.

  • Conduct behavior in a professional manner.

  • Follow Sunnyside Center’s policies and procedures.

  • Be flexible, dependable, and work as a team player.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by an appropriate supervisor.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education

  • 1-3 years’ experience in a day care/preschool/classroom setting

  • Outstanding communication, conflict resolution and behavior management skills

  • Ability to work as a part of a team

  • NYS Preschool Teacher Certification or eligible to receive certification
