General Description

Starting pay for Solid Waste Driver II is $19.87/hour and requires at least two years' experience.

Starting pay for Solid Waste Driver III is $20.87/hour and requires at least five years' experience.

This position is responsible for operating sanitation vehicles and performing physically demanding outdoor manual labor for the collection and disposal of refuse and other waste items within the City. Employees in this position are required to provide excellent customer service, become independent on all collection routes and vehicles, and maintain the safety of themselves and the Sanitation Workers under their supervision. This position is in the City’s Solid Waste Division and reports directly to the Sanitation Crew Chief.

This position requires a Florida Commerical Driver's License (CDL) and the selected candidate for hire must complete a pre-employment drug screen, background check, FMCSA Clearinghouse query, and DOT Certification physical examination.

Essential Job Functions

  • Independently drives and operates solid waste vehicles and machinery for the collection and disposal of waste including rear loaders, automated side loaders, beach can collection vehicles, claw trucks, and pickup trucks.

  • Assists Service Worker II personnel for the manual collection of waste, special pickups, and yard waste from homes, businesses, the beach, parks, buildings, and other facilities.

  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of Service Worker II assistants.

  • Performs routine maintenance tasks such as minor repairs to vehicles, containers and equipment.

  • Responsible for the maintenance, cleanliness, and routine inspection of all vehicles, including fueling, washing and greasing trucks and performing and following up on pre and post-trip inspections.

  • Provides excellent customer service and assists with customer education when appropriate.

  • Works with other division staff to maintain the cleanliness of the Public Works yard and disposal areas.

  • Uses a variety of hand tools and operates a forklift as necessary.

  • Maintains excellent communication with the Crew Chief and other division members.

  • Responds to and assists with cleanup efforts during and after special events and natural disasters.

  • Records extra pickup data and field issues.

Minimum Qualifications, Licenses and Certifications

  • Must be eighteen years of age or older.

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Must have a Class B Commercial Driver License.

  • One (1) year experience operating CDL vehicles preferred.

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities and Environmental Conditions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.

  • Ability to act as Division Crew Chief when necessary.

  • Ability to frequently lift/move 60lbs.

  • Ability to respond to afterhours call-ins in a reasonable amount of time.

  • Ability to comply with work schedules.

  • Regularly required to use hands to feel, handle and operate controls and tools.

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing and possess good people skills.

  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, possibly in inclement weather.
