Manager, Opto-Mechanical Design

Responsibilities

  • Technical responsibility of the Opto-Mechanical development process for all products designed at L3Harris WESCAM.

  • Provide leadership, guidance & coaching to an engaged, high performing engineering team to meet or exceed company goals.

  • Provide Opto-Mechanical expertise and act as an Opto-Mechanics Subject Matter Expert across the organization.

  • Ensure integrity of Opto-Mechanical designs by applying rigorous design review practices.

  • Develop a strong presence across the organization to maximize collaboration and synergy on cross functional projects and initiatives to meet company commitments.

  • Develop, improve and maintain the Opto-Mechanical Engineering design practices, processes and standards.

  • Rigorously follow existing Mechanical Engineering design practices, processes and standards.

  • Selection and management of Opto-Mechanical engineering tools to maximize efficiency of the product development process.

  • Estimate and validate the cost and schedule requirements of assigned opto-mechanical design work packages.

  • Monitor opto-mechanical design engineering demand via the engineering resource loading database and provide recommendations for new hires to meet expanding demand.

  • Provide the required metrics, reports and performance measures to the Director of Engineering.

  • Keep up-to-date knowledge of relevant Opto-Mechanical industry trends and new technologies.

  • Assist in sourcing of external Opto-Mechanical Design expertise, as needed.

  • Other duties as assigned by Director, Electro-Optical Engineering.

    Skills Required

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and engage a high performing engineering team to successfully meet goals

  • Knowledge of imaging lens and thin film coating design principles

  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering, fine mechanics and Opto-Mechanical design principles

  • Knowledge of optical design software such as CodeV and Zemax

  • Knowledge of Mechanical CAD software, Solidworks preferred

  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping techniques and methods

  • Proficient with various optical systems testing methodologies, primarily imaging lenses

  • In-depth experience with various optics manufacturing methods such as diamond turning and asphere polishing

  • Proficient in mechanics and optics lab environments

  • Track record of establishing strong relationships with leaders across the organization to get things done

    Experience & Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience, or

  • Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience, or

  • In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.
