Ensures all activities conducted are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to support International Tax team on various compliance, reporting and planning activities.

Tax compliance includes ensuring that certain information returns, tax computations, tax provisions, audit information and responses to tax queries are prepared, documented, reviewed, filed, responded to, as the case may be, accurately and on a timely basis.

Tax planning involves planning with respect to tax implications with respect to the international subsidiaries of the bank's activities.

Is this role right for you? In this role, you will:

  • Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.

  • Assisting with quarterly and yearly reporting processes

  • Acting as key point of contact for assigned international units, while building key strategic relationships.

  • Coordinating and collecting of required information from the business units.

  • Compiling and organizing information received from the assigned international subsidiaries.

  • reviewing foreign subsidiaries’ tax provisions to confirm the current/deferred tax accounts on the income statement and balance sheet.

  • ensuring accurate recording of the tax expense/benefit in relevant accounts.

  • reviewing the reconciliation provided for the current and deferred balance sheet accounts.

  • preparing various computations such as foreign tax credits.

  • Supporting the Senior Manager / Director of LATAM Tax and International Tax with any required ad hoc report; and,

  • Managing the delivery of the Smartview reports including updating for changes in transits, communicating that the updates are completed and on the server throughout the close process, while ensuring data accuracy and completeness.

  • Statutory effective tax rate planning and forecast for international subsidiaries.

  • Preparing the Bank’s foreign affiliate information reporting tax returns (T1134s) and transactions with related non-residents (T106s) in an accurate and timely manner, including but not limited to:

  • Coordinate and gather information for assigned entities.

  • Reconciliation to financial statements as necessary and the identification of items for follow up.

  • Complete and well documented supporting file; and,

  • Ensuring final product is complete and saved in an appropriate manner.

  • The maintenance of organized files is a key requirement for this position.

  • Assisting the International Tax team with responding to audit queries in respect of the Bank and its foreign subsidiaries.

  • Providing informational and documentation support to the tax department and the Bank as a whole by assisting the International Tax team in answering queries and providing information and documentation in a timely and accurate manner and coordinating with the Canada Revenue Agency where required in respect of such queries, information, or documentation.

  • Assist in the tax modelling, calculations, and compliance related to Global Minimum Tax implementation.

  • Assist in the planning activities of the Bank (which can include internal reorganizations, M&A activities, and other initiatives of the Bank).

  • Preparing and coordinating information related to international subsidiaries for surplus computations.

  • Support the International Tax Team with other requests such as analysis related to OCI, monthly tax provision, business line forecasting and other requests as required.

  • Create Smartview and/or Longview reports to enhance transparency of results.

  • Assist with initiatives in respect of automation of any compliance related processes to gain efficiencies within the group.

  • Research income tax issues as directed.

  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.

  • Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of their respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills that will enable you to succeed in this role? We’d love to work with you if you have experience with:

  • Experience in preparing and reviewing tax provisions for financial reporting purposes in accordance with IFRS.

  • Experience dealing with tax authorities either in Canada or a foreign country would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Foreign affiliate tax rules; experience in surplus calculations and FAPI regime is a strongly preferred.

  • Experience handling complex tax issues in respect to income taxes, interpretation of tax treaties and interaction of these topics with other matters such as transfer pricing and Canadian tax is strongly preferred.

  • Proficiency with the MS Office Suite of products, especially Excel, and ability to adapt to new technologies is an asset.

  • Experience or certain knowledge with internal reporting packages such as Longview, Oracle, Smartview, etc. would be strongly preferred.

  • Candidate should be an individual with strong teamwork capabilities, open to changes as they are required by the working environment, interested on continuous learning and sharing acquired knowledge with other members of the team.

  • Attention to details is essential. Highly organized with ability to make decisions in time sensitive environments. This involves the ability to work quickly and accurately under tight time frame for quarter end reporting and be able to multitask effectively. Strong communication skills such as the ability to communicate findings/analysis and present ideas in a clear concise manner.

  • Proficiency in Spanish is an asset.
