The Workers Compensation Ombudsman serves as a vital resource for individuals seeking assistance and information regarding workers compensation issues. This role involves providing impartial guidance, answering inquiries, and ensuring accurate documentation within the OSCAR system. The Ombudsman plays a key role in navigating the complexities of workers compensation laws, procedures, and benefits.

Key Responsibilities:

Inquiries and Guidance:

  • Respond to inquiries from injured workers, employers, insurance representatives, attorneys, and other stakeholders regarding workers compensation issues.
  • Research and provide detailed information on workers compensation laws, rules, and regulations, including coverage requirements, injury reporting, claim filing, accessing medical treatment, and the litigation process.
  • Provide information regarding the workers compensation procedures.

Documentation and Record-Keeping:

  • Maintain accurate and timely records of all contacts and assistance provided through the Ombudsman program within the workers compensation OSCAR system.

Fraud and Abuse Review:

  • Review contacts received by the Division for potential referral to the Fraud and Abuse Unit when applicable.

Referrals and Resource Management:

  • Refer contacts to other agencies or entities as needed for issues outside the workers compensation system.
  • Stay informed about available resources and services to provide comprehensive support to inquiries.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of workers compensation statutes, rules, and regulations.
  • Learn and apply mediation techniques to resolve disputes between parties.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in dealing with the public on technical matters and applying fact-finding techniques.

Communication and Judgement:

  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, including knowledge of business English, spelling, and arithmetic.
  • Exercise sound judgment and discretion in analyzing facts and making recommendations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two year technical or administrative experience in a community or public service program

Preferred Requirements:

  • Bachelor degree in related field of study
