ProMedica Health System RN / Registered Nurse - Enterostomal Therapist - Clinical Care Services - Full Time - Days in Toledo, Ohio

POSITION SUMMARY

The Enterostomal Therapy Nurse using the nursing process, assesses, plans, implements, and

evaluates the wound and ostomy patient, in providing direct patient care. The Enterostomal

Therapy Nurse provides ongoing care collaboration with the patient, family, and other members of

the care team, providing clinical expertise in wound and/or ostomy, considering age specific,

developmental, cultural, and spiritual needs. Responsible for delivering in-depth, comprehensive

direct patient care in complex, multiple problem patient care situations, providing excellent

customer service, care, and a positive patient experience. Serves as a care provider, facilitator and

educator to providers, staff, patients, and families to enhance their knowledge and skills regarding

wound and ostomy care.

SCOPE OF SERVICE

The Enterostomal Therapy Nurse provides nursing care to individuals and groups

which require specialized knowledge, judgment, and skill derived from the principles of biological,

physical, behavioral, social, spiritual/cultural, and nursing sciences. The Enterostomal Therapy

Nurse functions within the full scope of nursing practice as noted by the Board of Nursing of their

designated state for which they are practicing in addition to compliance with any of the hospitals

accrediting bodies.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise

  1. Assesses the patient’s current health status through the application of clinical knowledge and

skills obtained through education and experience. Using the nursing process, demonstrates

advanced knowledge, skills, and exercises clinical competence in the acute care setting

including but not limited to assessment, comprehensive wound evaluation, interpretation of

diagnostic data, coordination of patient care, completion of plan of care and all aspects of

patient and family education.

  1. Manages multiple priorities of working with a large caseload of complex wound and ostomy

patients in coordination with members of the health care team. Ongoingly reviews the plan

of care for patient response and effectiveness of treatment to promote optimal healing

outcomes.

  1. Develops age-appropriate plan of care; responsible for implementation and ongoing

evaluation for patients with ostomies, draining wounds, fistulae, incontinence, and pressure

ulcers.

  1. Collaborates with physician, patient/family and other health care team members in planning

the patients care and treatment.

  1. Maintains continuity of care by appropriate communication with health care team regarding

plan of care. Evidence is found in written documentation and by verbal feedback.

  1. Provides pre-op and post-op instruction concerning all aspects of ostomy management,

counsel’s patient, and family members regarding physical and psychosocial aspects.

Participates in discharge planning beginning on day of admission by identifying level of

discharge needs.

  1. Serves as a resource to nursing staff, administration, medical staff, other health care

disciplines and the community in area of expertise.

  1. Plans and implements educational programs for patients, families, nursing staff, health care

professionals and community.

  1. Actively participates in implementing change to improve work environment, work processes

and/or patient care while supporting and participating in Quality Improvement processes.

  1. Participates in orientation of nursing services employees.

  2. Actively participates with development of policies, procedures, and standards of care,

collaborating with appropriate staff.

  1. Attends selected workshops, conferences, or seminars to expand professional knowledge

and increase clinical skills, utilizing acquired knowledge in clinical setting.

  1. Is an active member of their professional and other related nursing organizations.

  2. Demonstrates time management skills by meeting timeframes and organizing work

responsibilities.

  1. Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills through effective written and verbal

communication, positive attitude, and behavior consistent with ProMedica’s mission and

values, and development of professional relationships.

  1. Participates in appropriate nursing or hospital committees.

  2. Performs other duties as assigned. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduate of an accredited School/College of Nursing

Skills: Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires

effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to tolerate possible exposure to blood borne pathogens

and body fluids.

Years of Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in nursing; actively practicing

License: Registered Nurse; Must be licensed to practice nursing in the State in which you are hired.

Certification: Current BLS CPR certification. Completion of CWON and/or CWS must be completed

by an accredited program within 3 years of hire; certificate required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: BSN/Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Years of Experience: Recommended 2 or more years’ experience providing wound and/or ostomy

care in a medical setting.

License: Dual licensure in Ohio and Michigan

Certification: Preferred completion of CWON and/or CWS. Must be completed by an accredited

program; certificate required. If not currently certified, completion of certification is required

within 3 years of hire.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Personal Protective Equipment: Demonstrate knowledge and use of standard precautions and

PPE.

Physical Demands: Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged

periods of standing. Must be able to move, lift or carry light to heavy patients or equipment

occasionally. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and use of safe patient handling equipment.

Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.
