BlackRock Vice President, Strategic Communications in Tokyo, Japan

About this role

The Marketing team within the Japan Marketing and Communications function at BlackRock Japan sets strategic direction and implements marketing plans for the client business in Japan. The team is responsible for building and protecting our brand, as well as making our investment capabilities the market’s preferred choice, while analyzing return on investment to inform and evolve future initiatives.

We are looking for an energetic individual with a thorough understanding of the asset management industry, financial services and capital markets, as well as public and private markets. The successful candidate will play a multifaceted role: Driving marketing campaigns or initiatives aimed at supporting objectives set by our Japan business, while proactively leading media campaigns and delivering high-impact outcomes to grow our “share of voice” in the media. Strategic communications will take various forms including narrative and message development, storytelling, development of press materials, video content, and so on, directed at B2B2C and media in Japan.

The position will be based in Tokyo and reports to the Head of Japan Marketing and Corporate Communications locally, working closely with various internal stakeholders and business partners in Japan as well as APAC. The successful candidate needs to demonstrate a solid understanding of the industry, products and client needs, as well as excellent writing skills (English and Japanese) and a media relations capability, as well as a commercially focused mindset that can evaluate activities to ensure content is creating positive business impact.

Overview of Responsibility:

  • Develop comms and content strategy, oversee development of content, and partner with Digital Marketing and Client Marketing colleagues on execution.

  • Develop, cultivate and maintain productive working relationships with the media (print/broadcast/digital).

  • Plan and drive media relations activities that build greater knowledge and recognition of the firm’s brand and its lines of business.

  • Handle and field external media (regional and local) enquiries in a professional, timely and efficient manner.

  • Develop and execute ideas and potential storylines for media interviews, placement of articles and other opportunities.

  • Develop press materials such as press releases, by-lined articles, media statements, key messages and media Q&As, plus briefing documents for our spokespeople.

  • Develop a full range of digital and social media strategies to optimize use of existing content and media activities and campaigns, internally and externally, including long-term business priorities and reputational campaigns.

  • Coordinate with PR agencies and other third-party vendors in the planning and execution of media events, roundtables, press conferences and educational seminars.

  • Flexibly support globally driven franchise programs such as translations of executive communications.

  • Introduce metrics for all communications/campaigns and report on efficiency and effectiveness; and budget coordination for assigned channels.

Experience/Qualifications/Skills:

  • 10-12+ years of marketing and corporate communications experience, and able to demonstrate experience and success as a content creator.

  • Solid knowledge of global macro economy, markets, investment strategies, and various investment topics, preferably within the investment management industry.

  • Media relations experience, including pitching stories that support business objectives and responding to inquiries.

  • Strong commercial market awareness, client acumen and intellectual curiosity.

  • Excellent command of both Japanese and English. Expert editorial skills including the ability to write/adapt materials for various client types and levels of investment sophistication. Must also be able to facilitate communication of complex ideas to non-technical audiences.

  • Driven and self-motivating, with an ability to work independently when needed and as a core part of cross-functional teams. You are upbeat, meticulous, committed to excellence and possess superb time-management skills.

  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with flexibility in regard to changes in strategy and project plans.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage a large number of projects simultaneously (multi-tasking)

  • Strong team player and excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact comfortably with senior executives, sales, portfolio managers and channel marketing managers.

  • Strategic and creative thinker with attention to detail.

  • Enthusiasm and willingness to proactively take on tasks and make a contribution beyond the scope of one’s own role.
