Examples of Duties

Tigard Police Officers perform law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrol and investigation. Sworn officers, enforce federal, state, and local laws, regulations and ordinances and performs a variety of duties including but not limited to the following:

  • Patrols roads, highways, business, and residential areas of the City. Enforces applicable traffic and criminal laws. Makes arrests, issues traffic citations and warnings. Prepares case records and reports. Participates in the prosecution of cases in court.

  • Responds to a wide variety of radio calls including theft, juvenile complaints, and family disputes. Investigates accidents, deaths, and criminal complaints. Makes arrests and issues citations when required.

  • Serves criminal warrants, applicable court orders, and subpoenas.

  • Assists disabled motorists. Provides information and direction to the public. Observes and reports road conditions, hazards, potential crime, and traffic problems.

  • Accomplishes the Police Department Mission to “to protect and serve all who live, play and work in Tigard.”

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and one (1) year of experience working with the public. Some college-level coursework in and/or volunteer law enforcement experience are desirable.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.

  • Police Officer Certification from DPSST or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of date of hire.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be a US citizen

  • Must be 21 years or older at the time of hire

  • Must pass DPSST certified entry level exam

  • Must pass ORPAT (see below)

  • Must be able to read and write the English language

  • Bi-lingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred

On the Public Safety Testing website:

  • Apply online with Tigard Police Department (applicants do not need to fill out the city's application form at this time).

  • Access information on testing procedures.

  • Choose a testing date, time, and location most convenient for them. Tests will be offered monthly at various locations around Oregon and/or Washington. Tests are not conducted online. PST offers a remote testing option.

Scores for applicants that pass the written test will be sent to the City of Tigard. Candidates with passing scores will be invited to submit a city application to schedule oral board interviews.

When Tigard receives passing test scores, candidates will receive an invitation to schedule an oral board interview. Be prepared to register by having a waiver form (https://www.tigard-or.gov/waiver) notarized.

The City of Tigard will request proof of passing ORPAT (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgEJ69s5h3g) scores and may provide opportunities for those who have not passed the ORPAT to do so prior to entering the background process.

After successful completion of the required tests, applicants can expect the following:

  • Invitation from HR staff to apply through the city's online application system (create a profile in advance (http://www.governmentjobs.com) ).

  • Oral Board Interview - scheduled regularly during the next 1-3 months; invitation to interview will be extended when passing scores have been received

  • ORPAT (if needed)

  • Suitability Evaluation

  • Background Investigation - Candidate history must include an extraordinary level of integrity and honesty

  • Interview with the Chief of Police

Upon conditional job offer, you will be required to undergo:

  • Psychological Evaluation

  • Medical Examination

  • Drug Test
