Agricultural Research Service Data Scientist in Tifton, Georgia
Summary This position is located within the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Southeast Area (SEA), at the Southeastern Watershed Research Unit in Tifton, GA. In this position, you will be responsible for identifying methods, processes, algorithms, tools, and systems to extract and interpret findings from varied structured and unstructured data sets. This is a term, time-limited appointment with an initial duration no less than 13 months and can be extended up to a total of 10 years. Responsibilities Develops scripts to link various software and establishes appropriate quality control procedures for high-throughput data systems. Utilizes computational, bioinformatics and experimental methods to better understand the biological research problems. Manipulates, mines, and translates data sets of variable sizes, types, and spatio-temporal resolutions into technological solutions, and applies existing algorithms. Uses Linux, Windows, Mac OS, and other commonly used computer operating systems, and provides support to Unit members, as needed, to improve their efficiency of the use of OS and software. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, data science or field directly related to the position. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study (30 semester hours) as shown above in paragraph A above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. AND In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience using different methods to work with large datasets; utilizing analytic or statistical software to acquire and analyze data; and developing methods and techniques relative to data mining, ingestion, or wrangling. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
