We are hiring immediately for a Research Scientist to join the UTHealth School of Biomedical Informatics in Houston, TX 77030. In this position, you will work on bioinformatics and the analysis of data involved in complex disease. Ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills both verbal and written, be familiar with computer programming, and have strong knowledge and skill set in genomic data analysis!

Position Summary:
We are looking for a Research Scientist who will work with the School of Biomedical Informatics. This employee designs and conducts research in the area of complex disease genetics, genomics and bioinformatics based studies. The primary responsibilities include development of analytical pipelines or computational methods, data processing and analysis, results interpretation, management of data, coordination of research projects, prepare reports, assistant with manuscripts and grant proposal writing, problem solving, training and supervising junior lab members, among others. In general this employee plans, supervises, and directs research, investigation, or other technical operations. Provides technical expertise to facilitate the design, implementation, and analysis of procedures, techniques, and results, which enables investigators to conduct research projects.
This is a fulltime position that is classified as exempt. It is eligible for all UTHealth benefits including medical coverage and participation in a retirement program administered by the State of Texas. Your work location will be in the heart of the Texas Medical Center at our University Center Tower building.
Position Key Accountabilities:
Design and conduct genetics and informatics research.
Assist grant proposal development and manuscript writing.
Present results in a written paper for publication, in a presentation at a meeting, or through personal contact with faculty members and other researchers.
Train, support and supervise junior lab members.
Manage research protocols and research data
Provide support and training of genome technologies and bioinformatics analysis to other researchers
Certification/Skills:
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Familiar with protocols and pipelines in genomic sequencing and data analyses.
Proficient with Python and R, and excellent working knowledge in TensorFlow and PyTorch.
With working knowledge of dbGaP and/or UK biobank.
With working knowledge of relational database.
Previous publication(s) in genomics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, or machine learning
Minimum Education:
- Doctorate Degree.
Minimum Experience:
- Two (2) years of experience in a related research environment and have verifiable publications within the field of the research project.
Physical Requirements:Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.Security Sensitive:This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215
