Summary This position is located at the Tallahassee National Cemetery in Tallahassee, Florida. Responsibilities The primary duties involve the maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment used in the operation of a national cemetery. Equipment maintained incudes pickup trucks, dump trucks, back hoes, tractors, riding and push mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, and similar equipment. Position also includes Cemetery Caretaker duties as assigned. These duties include interment and grounds maintenance operations. Incumbent may also apply a working knowledge of a variety of trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting and masonry. Operates, uses test equipment and tools such as wrenches, sockets, brake tools, pliers, screwdrivers, etc. Performs maintenance repair work on automotive type vehicles and a wide variety of engineering and grounds equipment. Vehicles and equipment (gas and diesel) include but not limited to: 2 ½ ton dump trucks up to 30,000 GVWR sedans, panel and pick-up trucks ½ -5 tons, industrial tractors and back hoes up to 16 tons and 115hp, heavy frontend loader, various mowing machines (riding and walking), ditching machine, forklift, compressors, generators, powered trimmers and shears, and various towed equipment. Incumbent will be required to assist automotive mechanic in the performance of the Fleet manager duties. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Your background must demonstrate work involved in landscaping, grounds keeping, or other related trades experience that includes the use of hand tools and/or power tools, and the safe operation of related machinery and equipment used in cemetery caretaking practices, as described in the duties section of the announcement. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work is strenuous, awkward and may involve being in uncomfortable positions. Employee is required to stand for long periods of time; and often times requiring bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles to make repairs in tight spaces. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally moves moderately heavy items with assistance of mechanical devices, including objects weighing over 5 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Occasional work outside under adverse weather conditions. He/she may continually be exposed to dirt, dust, and grease. Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
