To achieve this goal, we are looking for a Thermal Engineering Manager with a passion for developing customer-focused solutions and striving for engineering excellence in thermal design and analysis. The Thermal Engineering Manager will contribute to the design, development, and deployment of future high density, liquid-cooled systems in Azure datacenters by developing and leading a global team of thermal engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of thermal engineers to develop systems and building blocks for Azure datacenters

  • Bring clarity, create energy, and drive results in a way that inspires engineers to perform at their best and grow their careerProvide technical guidance, development, and mentorshipin mechanical design, validation, and technical leadership

  • Recruit, hire, and grow talent to build a high performing teamDevelop scalable work flows with focus on continuous improvement, quality, cost, and predictability

  • Ensure high standards of engineering excellence in design and development balanced with the need for agility and time to market

  • Build relationships with key partners inside and outside Microsoftto source components, lead design strategy, ensure robust performance prediction, review manufacturing processes, and ensure adherence to regulatory, quality, and safety standards.

  • Ability to understand the ODM working relationship and drive the thermal engineering team to successfully collaborate with ODM’s to deliver products that meet specification.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems, provide technical guidance and mentorship to other engineers, and foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Drive strategy for thermaltechnology and design strategy with keen focus on sustainable materials with respect to their mechanical properties and re-use of common parts across generations.

  • Stay abreast of the latest trends, advancements, and best practices in thermal engineering, cloud infrastructure, and data center technologies, and propose innovative ideas to enhance our hardware offerings.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Education:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineeringwith a focus on Heat Transfer and Fluids

  • Experience:Minimum of 8 years experience in industry performing a thermal engineering function

  • Technical Skills:Understanding of thermal/mechanical design principles and predictive analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes, and use of CAD and CAE software

  • Leadership Abilities: At least two years experience leading ateam of engineers, coordinating complex projects, and driving innovation in a collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Industry experience in serverhardware development, data center infrastructure, or cloud computing

  • Experience in systems level thermal design including thermal simulation

  • Experience in cross-discipline design process from chip to the rack level

  • Experience managing ODM engineering deliverables

  • Knowledge of material science, design for manufacturing, and sustainable design

  • Experience with prototyping, tooling design, and high volume manufacturing
