Job Summary

This job is responsible for supporting population and community health strategies through the development and promotion of Faith Community Nursing (FCN) and Health Ministry support programs in local congregations and faith groups. Work includes planning, marketing, implementing, managing and evaluating the regional Congregational Health Ministries (CHM) program. Work also contributes in the development and implementation of Virginia Mason Franciscan Health (VMFH) identified initiatives/programs/projects to create/maintain healthier communities and improve community health outcomes.

Work requires the services of a Registered Nurse who, based on training and work experience, uses professional knowledge and judgment in conducting congregational needs assessments, creating and implementing congregation-specific nursing and health ministry programs and consulting with Faith Community Nurses/Health Ministers (HM) to support these programs. An incumbent may represent VMFH on community boards/coalitions to build/sustain strong and mutually trusting relationships/partnerships focused on local health issues/concerns focused on identifying/recommending/implementing viable solutions. Work also includes collaborating with community organizations to identify barriers to creating/maintaining healthier communities, cultivate innovative partnerships, address priorities/issues through collaborative problem-solving and develop creative strategies/solutions for a supportive environment in the creation of healthier communities.

Work requires knowledge and effective skills in community outreach and coordination. Considerable knowledge and exposure to local community service agencies/resources is also required. Travel within the VMFH service area is required.

Job Functions:

  • Develops, implements and provides administrative oversight for the Faith Community Nurse/Health Ministry support program.

  • Collaborates with area congregations in the establishment, preparation and ongoing support of Faith Community Nurse/Health Ministry teams.

  • Develops appropriate referral networks for FCN/HM programs.

  • Coordinates, organizes and supports the involvement of VMFH with local stakeholders in promoting the development of healthier communities and improving health outcomes; works collaboratively with community-based organizations to identify opportunities/barriers to creating/maintaining healthier communities and to propose/implement effective and sustainable solutions.

  • Oversees the implementation and administration of assigned grant-funded community projects; monitors activities and assurance compliance with grant provisions and budget.


Education/Work Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in health care administration or related discipline, graduation of an accredited school of nursing, and two years of recent clinical work experience in nursing practice that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities, including community coalition-building skills.

Completion of the Foundations of Faith Community Nursing Course through the Westberg Institute is preferred.

Active involvement within a faith community and its structure with at least 2-3 years of experience as a Faith Community Nurse and/or experience in community nursing is preferred.

Master’s degree in nursing or related healthcare field is preferred.


Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the State of Washington.
