Amazon Systems Engineering Manager in Sydney, Australia

The Region Services team redefines the way AWS designs, builds, and operates AWS regions to enable new AWS Cloud Infrastructure and Services offerings to customers across every industry and of every size, including start-ups, enterprises, and public sector organizations.

We are building some of the largest and most complex distributed systems in the world, and we need adaptable people to help us implement and operate them.

As a leader, you'll drive innovation across critical projects, foster a culture of excellence, and revolutionize how we approach technical solutions. Working closely with cross-functional stakeholders, you'll balance technical leadership with people management to create impactful outcomes that drive meaningful change. This position can be based at our Sydney or Melbourne office locations.

Key job responsibilities

  • Hire and develop the best Engineers at AWS by leveraging your technical ability to identify outcomes, design project plans, and drive the right actions to build the technical acumen of the team

  • Lead incident management processes and coordinate cross-team responses to service outages

  • Drive continual improvement in systems operations through tool building and automation

  • Establish and maintain operational excellence standards

  • Drive root cause analyses, in collaboration with software development teams, as well as influencing local development to improve operational performance

  • Report on the health of these services

Utility Computing (UC)

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant hands-on systems engineering and administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems

  • 2+ years experience as the systems engineering and operations leader in a 24x7 environment

  • This position requires that the candidate selected be an Australian citizen and hold or be able to attain an Australian Government Security Vetting Agency clearance (see https://www.agsva.gov.au/applicants/eligibility-and-suitability)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven ability to write scripts and automate manual tasks

  • Demonstrated skill and passion for operational excellence

  • Proven track record of service improvement and optimization in production

  • Experience building tools and/or services with Java, Python or Perl

  • Database development/administration; NIX system administration
