Position Summary

The Terus Environmental Coordinator serves as the primary technical resource for all environmental matters within Terus Construction. Working closely with the Regional Construction Managers and Regional Ready-Mix Supervisors and reporting to the Terus HSE Manager, the Environmental Coordinator plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful implementation of the company's environmental initiatives and programs.

Role Summary

The key focus of this role is to achieve consistent compliance with internal and external environmental protection requirements across all business units and operational activities. The Environmental Coordinator actively assesses federal, provincial, municipal, and Colas environmental initiatives and keeps the Terus management team informed of these initiatives and the performance outcomes they require.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Terus Construction to carry out activities for implementation of Environmental Protection Program and Action Plans.

  • Assist with meeting environmental requirements of Terus’ parent company Colas Canada and work cooperatively with the Colas Environmental Advisor.

  • Work in close consultation with the Terus HSE Manager and Terus Division Managers on matters of environmental importance.

  • Keep the Terus HSE Manager informed of all environmental issues that could have a negative on the goal of achieving zero accidents, create a legal liability, and/or affect compliance with company or regulatory requirements.

  • Provide regular input to the Terus HSE Manager on what is required for continual environmental improvements.

  • Conduct environmental inspections and audits at company sites, prepare reports on the findings, and submit these reports to the Terus Manager HSE.

  • Monitor environmental legislation and proposed regulatory changes that can impact the Terus group of companies and keep the Terus HSE Manager apprised of these changes in a timely manner.

  • Assist in compiling information for all regulatory and internal environmental reporting.

  • Provide the on-going assistance necessary for ensuring that company and regulatory environmental requirements are met or exceeded.

  • Develop documents necessary to maintain an effective environmental protection program and assist the Terus HSE Manager in maintaining the HSE Program Manual and related documents pertaining to environmental protection.

  • Develop and deliver training pertaining to protection of the environment as may be required to support operations, including participation in Start-up Meetings.

  • Assist operations personnel to complete environmental hazard assessments and develop Environmental Management Plans.

  • Periodically attend on-site safety meetings such as Tailgate Safety meetings, Toolbox Safety Talks, etc. to support operations personnel on environmental issues.

  • Maintain currency on applicable company policies, practices, procedures, etc., and regulatory requirements.

  • Liaise with environmental regulatory enforcement agencies as required to assist operations personnel for issues that arise from related regulatory inspections.

  • Participate as a member of the Terus Environment Committee or lead the Committee as Chair or Co-Chair.

  • Special related assignments as required by Terus HSE Manager.

Experience & Knowledge required for the role

  • Recent graduate (BSc) in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, or Environmental Technology (or equivalent).

  • Computer literate with good working knowledge of Microsoft Office software.

  • Knowledge of environmental issues relevant to road construction and allied industries such as ready-mix concrete, aggregate supply and civil works.

  • Working knowledge of environmental regulatory requirements applicable to road construction and allied process, and mines in BC and the Yukon.

  • Excellent communication skills (oral and written).

  • Excellent time management, organizational and problem-solving skills. Self-motivated and a team player.
