Retail Operations creates the tools and programs that empower our teams to provide, a one of a kind, only at Apple experience. The Retail Technology Engineering organization is responsible for the design, development and deployment of apps and digital experiences across all Apple Retail Stores worldwide. These employee and customer-facing apps and experiences have material top and bottom-line impact for Apple. You will join a team of software, system, QA and AV engineers who participate in all elements of the product development life cycle. This team is fundamental to innovation and the establishment of scalable technologies for Apple Retail.

Description

This position involves the architecture, roadmap, implementation, and support of software tools that automate digital experiences to over tens of thousands of Apple devices across 500+ stores worldwide. The delivery of engaging customer-facing interactive content to our stores relies heavily on these tools. Our primary users are Operations, who depend on these tools for their daily activities, and our key partners are Product Marketing, who ensure the content aligns with strategic goals. In addition to design and development, in partnership with QA teams and users, you will also be responsible for resolving issues surrounding performance, capacity and system limitations. This position works cross-functionally with many business partners within Apple Retail and the wider Apple Software Engineering and IS&T organizations to collaborate on and influence technical roadmaps. This also encompasses engineering research where applicable as well as partnering and coordinating activities with the macOS and iOS Program Office, Retail and Product Marketing teams. Additionally, you will be responsible for ensuring technical documentation is up to date.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience throughout the software development lifecycle, including system architecture & design, implementation, QA, CI/CD, reliability, maintenance and support, especially for distributed systems

  • Expert knowledge of functional and object-oriented programming languages, specifically Python and/or Swift/ObjectiveC

  • Experience programming for Apple platforms and Apple File Systems (e.g. iOS, macOS, iPadOS, watchOS, tvOS, visionOS) for feature delivery, code sharing, shipping and managing an App in the App Store, localization

  • Expertise in UNIX / LINUX and UNIX-based setup tools e.g. Bash, ssh, rsync, etc.

  • Expertise integrating with Mobile Device Management systems (e.g. sysadmin experience of managing devices at scale, including deployment of packages)

  • Knowledge of integrated testing frameworks (XCTest, pyTest, Xcode automation tools, iOS automation tools)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Solid understanding with client/server side programming (Ruby on Rails framework, Ruby as a core language) and event queuing systems (e.g. Sidekiq, Temporal)

  • Working knowledge of API integration with multiple technologies (JSON, ProtoBuf, REST, RPC, XML, etc)

  • Knowledge of RSpec, MiniTest, Selenium, CI/CD etc a plus

  • Deep understanding of iOS, and macOS operating systems and Apple technologies.

  • Knowledge of AWS and DevOps a plus

  • Curious, persistent, and desire to think out-of-the-box to identify the source of a problem

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and ability to bring clarity to ambiguous situations

  • Demonstrate Apple's value of inclusion in daily activities

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $175,800 and $312,200, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs.
