RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serves as the overall leader to facilitate the BD Production System Safety Component Teams to proactively improve safety for our associates, evaluate risks and incidents, and identify areas where costs and loss experience can be improved through new initiatives, root cause and preventative actions, and accurate and timely communication.

  • Directly accountable for managing the Site EHS Team, (1 Environmental and Safety engineer, 1 on-site Occupational Health Nurse, 1 EHS Coordinator, and oversite of contracted security team members).

  • Assure compliance with all applicable BD Corporate, DOT, OSHA, and EPA regulations.

  • Develops/maintains site strategy, systems, policies, and procedures related to EHS. Develops and conducts periodic safety audits / assessments to evaluate compliance to regulations and facility safety & environmental policies & procedures. Documents assessment findings, assists leadership in resolving discrepancies.

  • Coordinates TBRA, HAZOP, FMEA and ergonomic evaluations and assists in implementation of process improvements. Participates with teams to design new and existing processes with hazard minimization and waste reduction as primary objectives.

  • Responsible for development of effective and engaging safety and environmental training materials. EHS Team Delivers training content as necessary which includes new hire safety orientation.

  • Performs risk assessments and process evaluations to determine the need for engineering controls and/or administrative controls. Coordinates implementation of process controls as related to safety/environmental issues.

  • Leads or participates on ISO 14001 Environmental Management Team. Assists in regulatory compliance assurance associated with waste management, wastewater discharge, air quality, UST management and spill control. Proactive at waste minimization.

  • Oversees the drafting and implementation of procedures that provide GMP facility control standards. Implements procedures that provide BMP safety and environmental standards. These standards to equal or exceed accepted industry standards (ISO 9001, IS14001, OSHA, EPA, FDA GMP’s). Perform inspections and audits to assure compliance to procedures and regulatory requirements. Assure regulatory reporting is completed as required by Federal, State and local agencies.

  • Provides leadership of the environmental management system in compliance with ISO 14001 certification. Assures regulatory compliance in waste management, wastewater discharge, air quality, storage tank management and spill control. Is proactive at waste minimization.

  • Participates on BD corporate teams and sites initiatives as needed to ensure best-in-class safety and environmental programs.

  • Aligns with all local, state, federal safety regulations, policies, and procedures including RCRA Hazardous waste regulations.

  • Follows all local BD quality and safety policies, procedures, and practices through consistent application of sound quality assurance and safety principles.

  • Creates and continually updates an EHS 5-year Strategic Playbook to outline the key actions, resources, and spend necessary to drive to zero injuries.

  • Develops EHS team, ELT, and hourly safety component leaders to be effective in their roles and prepare for advancement opportunities.

  • Participates on the Tier 4 LT weekly meetings and demonstrates the courage and ability to constructively challenge to drive action and permanent safety and environmental solutions.

  • Other duties as assigned.

DELIVERABLES

  • Site Safety Performance at or below Divisional expectations. Develops and measures leading and lagging metrics for both safety and environmental programs which ensure site compliance with DOT, EPA and OSHA regulations for BD associates and contractors. Implement process improvements from JSHA, HAZOP, FMEA and ergonomic evaluations.

  • Delivery- Embed sustainable process and practice which result in little to no waste.

  • People - Foster new and diverse ideas through courageous team interactions. Engages fully in all HR programs and process, such as succession planning and performance management.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Bachelors in Environmental Health, Safety Engineering, or a related field preferred

  • Minimum of 7 years of direct EHS experience.

  • Minimum of 2 years as a direct people manager.

  • 3+ years of experience in a highly automated and large manufacturing environment (500+ employees) preferred.

  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional) certification preferred.

  • Project management experience with people managers, hourly production associates, and technical associates.

  • Previous experience as a lead auditor (internal or external) (preferred)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with ISO14001 ; experience managing ISO14001 EMS program (preferred).

  • Knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 regulations.
