University of Connecticut (UConn) Assistant/Associate Professor in Residence – College of Engineering in Storrs, Connecticut

INTRODUCTION

The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) seeks qualified candidates for a non-tenure track position of Assistant or Associate Professor in Residence (APiR) to teach a variety of cross-disciplinary courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Depending upon the candidate’s background, they will be housed in the appropriate school or department within the college for promotion and review purposes. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education. The responsibilities of applicants for this position are as described below.

The University of Connecticut is pleased to invite applications for an In-Residence faculty position in the College of Engineering at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor at the Storrs campus. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

Founded in 1881, UConn is a Land Grant and Sea Grant institution and member of the Space Grant Consortium. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The College of Engineering welcomes approximately 1000 first-year undergraduate students and approximately 130 graduate students across all majors each year. At the undergraduate level, the college is responsible for offering multiple courses to incoming students that help them transition from high school to college, confirm their choice of major within the college, and provide them with opportunities for team-based, project-based, and experiential learning. The college also supports the Multidisciplinary Engineering (MDE) major, which crosses disciplinary boundaries. At the graduate level, there are a series of professional development courses offered to help build important student success skills for new and continuing graduate students.

The successful candidate will:

  • Teach/lead/organize the ENGR 1000 Introduction to Engineering course, taken by all incoming first-year students in the fall semester. This includes coordinating content with instructors at UConn’s four regional campuses.

  • Teach/support the ENGR 1166 Foundations of Engineering course, which serves all students outside the School of Computing, in collaboration with the Director of Engineering Education Initiatives, who oversees the logistics for this course each spring.

  • Support students in the Multidisciplinary Engineering major through teaching the ENGR 4001/4002W Capstone Design courses.

  • Coordinate and teach one/two graduate professional development course(s) with the Director of Engineering Education Initiatives.

  • The typical load for an APiR position is 6 courses per academic year.

Additional tasks may include serving as a mentor for senior design teams; contributing to and expanding the offerings associated with the MDE major; and participating in various outreach programs. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to teamwork, effective instruction at the undergraduate level, innovation in teaching and mentorship, and work closely with other teaching faculty to enhance classroom activities and instruction in the college. The successful candidate will also be expected to promote participation among members of under-represented groups and employ pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of all requirements for a Ph.D. in an engineering, computing, or closely related field by the time of appointment.

  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching, as evidenced by a teaching portfolio highlighting innovative teaching methods and/or verifiable exceptional success with positive student outcomes.

  • Ability to teach basic and advanced undergraduate engineering or computing courses.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • An established record of excellence in teaching, as evidenced by a teaching portfolio highlighting innovative teaching methods and/or verifiable exceptional success with positive student outcomes.

  • The ability to effectively communicate and a record of outreach and public engagement.

  • Demonstrated experience in inclusive or equitable teaching or equity-focused initiatives, as evidenced by a teaching portfolio highlighting innovative inclusive or equitable teaching methods and/or verifiable exceptional success with positive student outcomes in these areas.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a 9-month, non-tenure track position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Residence with an academic appointment in a school or department within the College of Engineering. The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the UConn main campus in Storrs, CT. The preferred start date is January 1, 2025. Salary and rank will be commensurate with candidate qualifications.
