Stony Brook University Trades Specialist (High Voltage Electrician) in Stony Brook, New York

Required Qualifications: Per Civil Service Standards and Specifications. Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in the electrical trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Electrician) traineeship or a two-year electrician training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program* such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. Candidate must be able to perform physical tasks of position such as bending, lifting, stretching and climbing. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces and from a ladder, scaffolding or man lift over ten feet in height. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver's License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. Preferred Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED. Experience working on high voltage systems.

Brief Descriptions of Duties: The Trades Specialist (Electrician) will be responsible for the operations and maintenance of the campus high voltage distribution system. The Trades Specialist will learn the University high voltage electrical distribution system and switching procedures. The extensive University high voltage infrastructure requires continuous reliability, ensuring uninterrupted service to critical research and academic equipment. Must consistently maintain and demonstrate a high regard for personal safety, for the safety of University assets and employees. Under intensive training, the incumbent will become familiar with the University high voltage infrastructure. The Trades Specialist will respond to University electrical outages during the off hours.

  • Perform preventative maintenance on high voltage distribution equipment according to prescribed procedures and schedule. Inspect electrical systems. Plan new or modify installations consistent with specifications and electrical codes. Locates and determines electrical malfunction using test instruments such as ammeter, volt meter, ohmmeter, oscilloscope, etc. Plans new or modified installations consistent with specification and electrical codes.
  • Repairs malfunction by such methods as replacing burnt-out elements and fuses, bypassing or replacing defective wiring, finding switch contact points, and cleaning or rewiring motors. Ensure protection against injuries (could be serious/fatal) and the failure of equipment resulting in University outages by taking extensive safety steps and required procedures. Ensure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard instruments.
  • Install control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels. Plan, layout, install and repair wiring, electrical and control equipment.
  • Using the knowledge of the National Electrical Code and NFPA-70E, read and understand drawings, standards and generator motor control diagrams. Prepare sketches showing location of all wiring and equipment and follow drawings and blueprints.
  • Using the knowledge, skill and ability, work with tools, equipment, and materials used in electrical system maintenance (megger, voltmeter). Make adjustments to electrical equipment. Repair mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic or electric components or electrical equipment and controls, using standard tools, gauges and procedures.
  • Respond to University electrical outages during the off hours.
  • Assist with the preventive maintenance and repairs of emergency generators, and the natural gas infrastructure.
  • Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. FLSA Nonexempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously. Mandatory rehire roster candidates have preference. SG 12 Hiring Rate $48,956, Job Rate $59,757. This position includes location pay of $3,400 per year.
