Description

Stony Brook Medicine Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants are valuable members of the Cardiology Department providing essential clinical services to our patient population. We are seeking candidates to work within the Division of Cardiology to provide coverage of our clinical service in the inpatient setting and outpatient Cardiac Cath Lab. Qualified candidates will demonstrate superior patient care and possess outstanding communication skills while adhering to our high standard of excellence.

The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Conducts comprehensive or episodic health assessments of acute cardiac patients on inpatient cardiac units and the outpatient cardiac cath lab unit from admission to discharge.
  • Establishes medical diagnoses, orders and evaluates diagnostic studies, accompanies patients off the floor for diagnostic testing when clinically required, prescribes and regulates medications, performs and monitors therapeutic procedures, assesses and/or manages follow up plans within the protocols and practice privileges approved by the Cardiology Attending and consistent with established policies and procedures.
  • Completes admission and daily documentation of care.
  • Performs approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for patients on the Cardiology Service.
  • Manages acute changes in clinical condition, providing emergent interventions as needed and communicating with attending cardiologist.
  • Makes referrals to other health care providers and/or requests consultative services based on clinical need of the patient.
  • Coordinates all aspects of care from admission to discharge in conjunction with members of the health care team to include nurses, social workers, physical therapists, consultants and hospital administration.
  • Maintains ongoing communication with physician collaborator and Chief Medical Officer relative to select aspects of patient care or administrative issues.
  • Acts as a resource and consultant to health care staff.
  • Develops, conducts and evaluates formal and/or informal continuing education.
  • Participates in Nursing, Medical and Administrative committees.
  • Maintains and enhances a current level of knowledge relative to professional practice, as well as continuing education requirements necessary for licensure and certification. Attends educational conferences.
  • Participates in the research process by contributing ideas, collecting data, sharing knowledge and applying new findings to practice.
  • Participates in the development and review of outcome data to measure the quality of patient care.

Other duties as assigned by the Lead Cardiology NP and Cardiology Department Administrators.

Note: There is a $15,000 stipend for working the night shift.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Nurse Practitioner: Current NYS RN license. Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Nursing from an accredited school. NYS license as an adult, family, and/or acute care nurse practitioner. AANP/ANCC certification.

Physician Assistant: Current NYS Physician Assistant license. Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited school. NCCPA Certification.

Must possess excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills; customer service/ interpersonal skills, problem solving, organizational skills, time management skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

At least one year of clinical experience working as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant in any of the following clinical settings: Cardiology, Medicine, Rapid Response Team, Emergency Department or Critical Care.

New Graduates may be considered if they can demonstrate strong prior critical care experience.
