Stanford University seeks a Life Science Technician II (LST II) at 100% effort for a 1 year term (subject to renewal) to join Dr. William Gilly’s lab and at (75% effort) and Dr. Barbara Block’s lab (25% effort) at Hopkins Marine Station (HMS) in Pacific Grove, CA, focusing on research on cephalopods and fish as well as public outreach programs. Work will involve behavioral and electrophysiological experiments on squid and octopus, and the LST II will participate in these activities. The LST II will also be responsible for acquiring living specimens through field collections on a variety of ships and from commercial vendors and be responsible for husbandry of these animals at Hopkins Marine Station and maintaining animal-holding facilities in the Denault Lab and Tuna Research and Conservation Center. These duties will require a basic understanding of fish and invertebrate husbandry; as well as practical experience with electrophysiology practices, an ability to carry out fine dissections of living tissues, experience with small boat operation on Monterey Bay and a California Boater Card, and the ability to carry out focused behavioral studies using advanced video equipment and techniques provided by collaborators at Stanford. The LST II will also work with the Squids4Kids outreach program, for which experience with gyotaku print-making and other artistic techniques, and experience at integrating science and art for outreach and educational programs are highly desirable. Participation in public Squids4Kids events will be on a voluntary basis. The LST II will also work with husbandry and experiments with tuna and other fish.

Typical duties include:

  • Carry out dissections of tissues to be used for electrophysiological experiments.

  • Assist with electrophysiological experiments and data analysis.

  • Carry out behavioral experiments with octopus and assist with data analysis.

  • Collect squid from a small vessel in Monterey Bay.

  • Arrange for acquisition of octopus from scientific and commercial sources.

  • Maintain live cephalopods at Hopkins Marine Station.

  • Maintain live tunas at the Tuna Research and Conservation Center

  • Take responsibility for upkeep of the relevant animal holding facilities.

  • Maintain the user-data base, manage shipments, and develop web content for Squids4Kids.

Characteristic Duties

  • Perform animal surgical techniques such as suturing, catheterization and infusion of arteries, small organ dissection, organ perfusion and tumor implantation and passage in small animals.

  • Immunohistological procedures including frozen sectioning and multi-step immunologic staining for fluorescence or enzymatic detection. Some level of histologic assessment may be required.

  • Maintenance, transfer and establishment of cell lines from normal or tumor cells, preparation and bioassay of serum, screening for contamination, isolation of cell mutants, cell staining, mass production of cells and cell cloning.

  • Fixation, dehydration, staining and embedding of specimens for electron microscopy; carbon coating, negative staining, shadowing, operation of electron microscope (EM) either transmission or scanning; use of an ultramicrotome with a diamond knife for routine thin sectioning; alignment of an EM where the system is automated.

  • Purification and /or structural characterization of compounds for which a protocol is well


  • Separation of cells, organelles, or molecules using density gradients.

  • Radioimmunoassay of viruses, proteins, or hormone levels in cell extract according to established protocol.

  • Techniques such as electrophoresis, chromatography, autoradiography, radiolabeling of animals, cell cultures, or macromolecules.

  • Isolation, purification and maintenance of mammalian viruses and bacteriophages; determination of viral concentration.

  • Genetic manipulation of bacteria including mutagenesis, ‘phage transduction and transformation.

  • Accurate documentation of experimental protocols and basic statistical analysis of data.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college coursework in the scientific discipline a combination of equivalent education and relevant work experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand.

  • Ability to stand and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.

  • Occasionally lift and handle materials up to 10 pounds.

  • Rarely carry/pull and/or push up to 20 pounds.

  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.

  • Position may require repetitive motion.

Working Conditions

Work occurs in a research laboratory environment. Depending on research, may work in the vicinity of animals, chemicals, gasses, or hazardous materials. Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) if required.
