Teachers Retirement Association (TRA) has been providing pension coverage to Minnesota educators for decades, with a mission to help members and their beneficiaries plan for an independent and financially secure retirement. We are currently seeking IT System Administrator job candidates with strong technical ability and interpersonal skills for our IT System Administrator role.

Our System Administrator is a part of TRA’s TechOps department and it exists to provide advanced system development, administration, and maintenance for all of TRA’s computer networks and its business users. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: monitoring all of TRA’s servers, virtual desktops, endpoints, and system applications; developing and validating automatic patching and backups processes; analyzing the cause of complex system performance problems and software failures in order to ensure corrective action is taken to resolve issues; providing user account access and hardware management; and independently researching and recommending technology products that will help facilitate an effective and secure digital environment. Additionally, the incumbent will be tasked with taking a leading role on smaller organizational projects and participating on larger projects under the direction of IT Management and/or Senior Architects. Lastly, the incumbent hired into the role will serve as an administrator for Active Directory Services, Data Protection Solutions, and provide tier 3 help desk support.

This position is located in our St. Paul, Minnesota office and will require the incumbent to work a schedule that includes in-person work. Additionally, the incumbent hired into this position must also possess the ability to secure their own transportation for in-state business travel. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time for this role.

Minimum Qualifications

Three (3) years of experience providing Information Technology (IT) support in a virtual environment. A Master’s degree in IT, Information Systems (IS), Computer Science, or a related field may substitute for three (3) years of experience, OR a related Bachelor’s degree may substitute for two (2) years of experience, OR a related Associate’s degree substitute for one (1) year.

Experience and/or education must demonstrate technical ability, knowledge, and expertise with the following:

  • Advanced technical experience managing virtual desktops, servers, and software applications, such as VMware.

  • Advanced technical experience working with directory services, such as Active Directory.

  • Advanced administration experience managing backup software and data protection solutions.

  • Advanced experience providing help desk support in a call center environment and/or in-person.

  • Advanced technical experience managing endpoints with endpoint management tools.

  • Ability to independently plan, organize, and successfully manage competing projects, priorities, and deadlines.

  • Ability to diagnose problems, complex system failures, security vulnerabilities, in order to recommend cost-effective and/or alternative solutions.

  • Strong interpersonal, written communication, and verbal communication skills necessary to lead and collaborate on enterprise projects; train and present to a variety of stakeholders; present complex information to users in a comprehensive style; and influence others to resolve conflicting viewpoints.

  • Advanced proficiency in using Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook; Cisco WebEx; or equivalent software packages.

This position requires the following certifications or an ability and willingness to obtain within one year the following certifications: VMware Certified Professional Desktop Management or VMware Certified Professional Data Center Virtualization.

Successful candidates must also be able to secure own transportation for in-state business travel. Travel may be required up to 10% of the time for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced experience managing VMware Horizon Desktops in a multi-site environment.

Advanced experience managing VMware Cloud foundation technologies in a multi-site environment

Experience with security technologies and methods to secure desktops, servers, operating systems and endpoints.

Advanced administration experience managing and deploying thin clients & zero clients.

VMware Certified Professional Desktop Management or VMware Certified Professional Data Center Virtualization certified.

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional transporting of articles such as file folders, ledgers and/or small tools. May be required to move or maintain a stationary position for long periods of time.
