Join a mission-driven team in the Drinking Water Protection Unit within Environmental Health and contribute to protecting, maintaining, and improving the health of all Minnesotans. As Water Quality Parameter Engineer you will assist in the performance of program responsibilities in the Section of Drinking Water Protection as they relate to the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). These program responsibilities assure the adequate operations and treatment of public water supplies in order to promote and protect the health of consumers served by such supplies.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Manage and coordinate SDWA regulations at community water supplies.

  • Collect water samples as required by federal and state drinking water rules.

  • Review drinking water projects proposed by community water systems and/or their consultants.

  • Provide technical assistance to community water suppliers, department field staff, consulting engineers regarding the planning, design, operation, maintenance, treatment, quality control and security of public water systems.

  • Deal with emergency situations (natural disasters, security breaches, and terrorist acts) related to drinking water.

  • Provide general information to the public.

  • Represent the section at meetings and conferences.

  • Respond to consumer complaints regarding water quality, suspected waterborne illness, low pressure, etc.

This vacancy is being announced at two different job classification levels: Engineer 1 Graduate and Engineer 2 Graduate. Only one position will be filled, and the final job classification of the position will be determined based on the selected candidate’s qualifications.

This position will have the option of some teleworking; however, it will be based on the business needs of the unit and is at supervisory discretion.

Minimum Qualifications

Engineer 1 Graduate:

  • Bachelor’s degree or a degree in progress in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field.

Engineer 2 Graduate:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field.

  • Two years of professional level engineering experience.

A Master's degree in Civil, Environmental/Sanitary, Chemical, Mechanical or related engineering field may be substituted for 6 months of direct experience.

Additional minimum qualifications to be assesses during the interview process:

  • Ability to communicate technical engineering information, orally and written, interpret engineering data and information.

  • Experience communicating technical engineering information, orally and written, interpreting engineering data and information.

  • Public water system engineering knowledge including operation, construction and design and rules, requirements, and application of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer in Training certification from National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

  • Knowledge of common engineering practices, methods, and procedures in technical engineering work.

  • Experience using equipment and materials in modern engineering operations.

  • Ability to recognize transmission risks in public health work involving waterborne diseases.

  • Experience effectively prioritizing workloads and meeting essential timelines for assigned project completion.

  • Experience reading documents, maps, gauges, equipment manuals, with computer use sufficient to operate computer/software and produce reports.

  • A valid Class D driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Stand and walk even/uneven or sloping ground for significant periods of time, including on snow covered ground, for up to a mile.

  • Lift as much as 50 pounds of equipment or samples and frequently lift from ground to waist height and from waist to shoulder height.

  • Work outdoors in all seasons with inside/outside exposure to weather extremes. Perform gross and fine motor tasks, sometimes with unprotected fingers and hands, in varying indoor/outdoor temperature.

  • Work in small, confined spaces.

  • Work in loud environments for short periods of time.

This position requires successful completion of a background check and employment reference check.

A valid driver’s license is not required; however this position demands travel that the employee will be responsible for meeting.
